Product Description

From Library Journal

Although the opening scene of this medieval tale borders on the mystical, this impression is not validated to any degree until two-thirds of the way through the book, when Sophie and Hugues de Pontesse finally encounter the sorceress and Sophie is forced to make a choice between her magical heritage and her love. Until then, the novel reads as a straight historical, with a lot of emphasis on the political and economic realities of early 13th-century France. While much of this is interesting, the book would have benefited from better character development, motivation, and a more tightly woven plot. Nevertheless, it contains some truly lovely descriptive passages, and it seems that Delacroix (Honeyed Lies and Unicorn Bride, both Harlequin, 1994) has closely researched the history, culture, and mythology of the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quickly becoming a FAN, May 2 2001

This review is from: The Sorceress (Mass Market Paperback)
I haven't read many Delacroix books, but this one sounded unique so I traded for it. I had trouble convincing myself to read it because I am not a big fan of historical romance. Once I started the book, I didn't want to put it down. The historical references were fabulous, especially the references to standing stones. I found Sophie charming. She goes to a town meeting one day and meets a man she has seen in her dreams. She is more then a little stunned, and quickly draws the conclusion that he is her destiny. She kisses him right after the meeting. Her father is horrified and quickly rushes the girl home, for a good talking too. The talking too, reveals startling revelations about Sophie's parentage and her future. She must quickly choose between the village men for a husband, but finds she cannot do so, believing that her destiny is the knight who spoke at the town meeting. She is determined to find the Standing Stones from her dreams, knowing she will find her knight and destiny there as well.

Meanwhile the knight believes the enchanting creature that bestowed that kiss, is married and probably less then sain. He is traveling onboard a boat when a commotion draws him to where said woman is about to be physically tossed into the ocean for stowing away, and for being a woman on a boat, very bad luck. The tale propells itself from there. I like how each character grows as the story unfolds.
