5.0 out of 5 stars IN A DIMENSION OF HER OWN, Nov 7 2010
By Douglas Modig - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sospiri (Audio CD)
Bartoli never ceases to stun me. Most singers of elevated standard have recorded the " classics" of sacred or sacral music which appears on Bartoli's latest release. She will, by necessity, be compared to giants, such as Norman, Price or Popp, and her audacity to rise to the occasion is rewarding at all levels.

Popp's subtility and amazing vocal purity made me believe that no other singer ever could live up to her rendition of, for instance, Pié Jesú. I was wrong.

When I frist heard Leontyne Price sing Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria" I could not imagine anything coming even close to her legendary rendition.

Jessye Norman's Norman's collection of sacred music I was convinced could not be equalled by anyone.

Bartoli's rendition of pieces such as Faurés Pié Jesú and Bach/Gounod's Ave Maria adds a new dimension to these beloved songs due to her discipline and good judgement to avoid sweeted dramatizing and showing off her vocal equilibrism.

Bartoli approaches this material with a respect and genuine emotionality that leaves you totally flabbergasted. I dare say that her Pié Jesú will be legendary. I cannot think of anybody singing Bach/Gounod's Ave Maria with such a healthy individuality and coming out with a rendition that supercedes most others.

Her talent appears limitless and we must be grateful that the Golden Era of the last half of the 20th century is continued by singers such as Bartoli, Norman, Kozena and von Otter inter alia.

The two discs may appear overseized, a bit too much, but that is not the case. Bartoli's cameleont tonality leaves nothing to desire. She is a blessing and we are blessed to have her among us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old wine in new bottles, Nov 18 2010
By David Ashworth "David" - Published on Amazon.com

I was very disappointed with this CD. I did not realise it was a compilation of previously released recordings. If had I known this beforehand I would not have bought it. The performance and recording are excellent but I have heard it all before.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice Gift, Nov 18 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sospiri (Audio CD)
As Christmas approaches, I suppose it will be useful to opera aficionados to be able to offer this attractive, albeit overpriced, set as a gift. But be warned that these discs are only a compilation of previously released material, a fact that DECCA unashamedly disguises. That is the only reason for my low rating. The singing, of course, is excellent but, in every sense, I've heard it all before. Devotees of Bartoli who have collected all her recordings will find only frustration in this release.
