Burlington space-rockers Sianspheric make no attempts at sounding current on their 2001 comeback disc, The Sound of the Colour of the Sun. After the sudden and acrimonious disappearance of their lead guitarist, the group went into an open-ended hiatus in 1999, with no real plans to return. Yet judging by this release, which arrived three years later, it sounds like nothing changed. The Sound of the Colour of the Sun is another sprawling set of woozy, slow-moving soundscapes dominated by walls of guitars and ribbons of sound. Songs like "To Myself" are incredibly heavy but with peculiar pop undertones. This odd mix can't be better heard than on Sianspheric's unlisted cover of the Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," which sounds like it was recorded underwater and is shockingly beautiful for a group known to damage eardrums. --Matt Galloway

5.0 out of 5 stars 2001: A Space Rawk Odyssey, Aug 2 2002

Sianspheric have done it again. The ideal mix between pure bliss and raw 'rawk' noise. Time and time again they've proven themselves to be THE most important Canadian band ever. Always a step ahead of their immitators, bands are copying their sound of three albums ago, while they're already 20 years in the future. High points on this one would have to be Tous Les Soirs-so spacey...so deafening-still surprises me every time the distortion crunch kicks in-it would shatter Jello. Also they slip in a cover of the Smiths Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want which is also a favourite. I haven't heard a better Smiths cover. All in all the album is essential for any lover of intelligent music. I'd be hard pressed to think of a better band around right now, continuing (but not immitating)the legacy built by bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Swervedriver, and Slowdive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canadian bliss-rock, Mar 14 2002
This review is from: Sound Of The Colour Of The Sun (Audio CD)
Sianspheric are awesome. I loved their earlier albums. This newest offering is just as good. Heavily textured guitars, and hushed/delayed vocals (almost buried) with a tasteful rhythm section keeping everything from floating away. Sianspheric play music for the thinking space rocker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sianspheric - 'The Sound Of The Colour Of The Sun' (Sonic Unyon), Mar 25 2010

Even better than their 'Else' CD (see my review) with quite a dreamy space rock like vibe through out the entire disc. Tracks that had me sitting up to take notice were the out-standing "To Myself", "Radiodiffusion", the somewhat-haunting "Slightly Less Sunshine" and "So Blue". Overall, this title sort of reminds me of My Bloody Valentine. Now, I know I eventually need to check out the band's entire catalog.
