Director Doug Liman (Swingers) tells the story of a day in the life of a botched drug deal that includes supermarket checkout girls, soap opera actors, and a British expatriate. Dawson's Creek's Katie Holmes, Armageddon's William Fichtner, and The Sweet Hereafter's Sarah Polley are among the stars. No Doubt leads things off with the unremarkable "New," the band's first single in two years. Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" is given a 1999 remix by Philip Steir, which means lots of stuttering beats, turntable swipes, extra beats, and inane noises. Fatboy Slim uses the same methods, but "Gangster Tipping" is a more appropriate context. Esthero with Danny Saber delivers the atmospheric "Song for Holly." Goldo is rightfully nightclub sleazy with "To All the Lovely Ladies." DJ Rap has an '80s synth groove mastered for "Good to Be Alive." The French band Air work a subdued vibe for "Talisman," the soundtrack's most sublime moment. --Rob O'Connor

3.0 out of 5 stars Underrated soundtrack for an underrated movie. April 22 2000
Format:Audio CD
GO. I thought that was an awesome name for a movie. Too bad the box office didn't agree. I loved the movie. But I didn't pick up this until a week ago, after I became a No Doubt fan and had to own everything they were on. If you read my review of Return of Saturn, the new album from No Doubt, I said that New is a good song, but not one of my favs. My, how things change. The song grew on me the way most favorite songs do, out of curiousity. It's so wild, no real, identifiable chorus, just a mixed bunch of good music. I love the song. If you don't like it the first time, it'll grow on you. Some other songs on the soundtrack are very good as well. Like, of course, the most unlikely hit in the world, Steal My Sunshine. Unfortunatley, it gets less and less catchy after every listen. Gangter Trippin is from Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim. Love this song. It's a trippy song, and you'll want it at parties. The surprise is Troubled By the Way We Came Together from Natalie Imbruglia. It has a great hook, and should've been a single. The rest, however, kinda goes down the drain. The eagle eye cherry track is a disappointment, and I'm ashamed to say I don't know alot of the other artists. Good to be alive and Cha Cha Cha are the best of the unknown bunch. I hate Magic Carpet Ride with a passion. It's awful. The rest are forgetful and skippable. So, if you like a Cd of 3 great songs and a couple ok ones, or if you love ALL TECHNO Stuff, this is for you.

If you loved the movie, I swear you'll be playing the Len, Natalia Imbruglia, Esthero, DJ Rap and BT tunes on a continuous loop.

I loved getting the soundtrack and then going back and watching the movie to finally pick up on where they used the music. Definitely captures that whole rave vibe the movie wound itself around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than your average soundtrack. Jan 6 2004

Format:Audio CD
I was actually really impressed with this cd, just as much as the movie. I'm not a huge fan of any of the bands, but they're all good, and song for song it all works well together. Some of the more popular tracks are "New", "Steal My Sunshine", and "Gangsta Tripping", but alot of the others are better. "Believer", "Talisman", and "Song for Holly" are all excellent, and I suprisingly liked "Troubled By The Way We Came Together". It's all just a good mix of techno, pop, and rock. Any fan of these groups, or especially the movie should dig this.
