Product Description

Product Description

South of Heaven, released in 1988, marked a significant musical departure. To contrast the aggressive assault put forth on Reign in Blood, Slayer consciously slowed down the tempo of the album as a whole. They also added elements like undistorted guitars and toned-down vocal styles not heard on previous albums. Some critics praised the album as demonstrating Slayer's desire to grow musically and avoid repeating themselves. But the new sounds disappointed some of the band's fans who were more accustomed to the style of earlier releases. Even though fans remain divided on the subject, two songs from the album ("Mandatory Suicide" and "South of Heaven") have become almost permanent additions to the band's live setlist. Following the release of South of Heaven, the band recorded a thrash-metal cover of Iron Butterfly's signature song, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. This song was included on the soundtrack to the movie Less Than Zero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece April 18 2012

Slayer's South of Heaven is a classic masterpiece and a must have for one's metal library at any age. Every track is solid no filler here... well maybe the solos ... but everyone cuts a little slack on slayer solos because we all know the riffs are of substance.

While Reign In Blood was faster than a speeding bullet, this album has better riffs and lyrics. Its also ground shakingly heavy. If you think Metallica's Master Of Puppets or Megadeth's Peace Sells But Who's Buying were scary then this album will be a living nightmare for you.No joke. Its just a big mean scary rock record and is metal in its purest form. While it lacks the irresistible melody of Metallica or Anthrax and isnt as timeless as Appetite For Destruction (which really isnt a metal record but its my favorite record of the 80s so I had to bring it up) it makes up for with pure aggresion. Its possibly the quintessential metal album of all time.

South of Heaven is generally regarded as the best metal of all-time and one of the heaviest albums of all-time. The song, South of Heaven, is a masterpiece and one of the best metal songs of the 80s and it puts Metallica's Enter Sandman to shame. Yes, Slayer is better than Metallica because they haven't changed in almost 20 years. South of Heaven is the second of the three metal masterpieces that Slayer released back in the 80s. South of Heaven is a headbanger's dream and a parent's nightmare.

5.0 out of 5 stars great
Reign in Blood is slayer's best 'fast' album. Slayers best 'slow' album is South of Heaven. If you're thinking about getting into slayer buy either of these masterpieces.
