About as faithful as a one off film could be to an entire season, and a very good job!
One can tell at times there wasn't time or budget to do multiple takes of performances, but this is rarely noticeable.
Seems to have been made exclusively by fans of the original series, and can comfortably stand on its own merits , to be enjoyed even by by those unfamiliar with the original.
The effects are stunning, yet appropriate- the real stars here remain the characters.
I'm very pleased to have lived to see a "real" wave motion cannon, and highly recommend this movie to all.
I'm hopeful another will be made.
Image quality is excellent, sound is excellent, all as one should expect from a Blu-ray release.
On to the film:
This was the first time I actually got to see it, and I never saw the original animated series. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a Japanese film, so it has the aesthetics that go along with that.
The action scenes are great.
The look of the film, the world building, the ships, were all absolutely top quality. However, here and there the actual CGI effects betrayed the lower budget available for the film, but not in a way that had any truly negative impact on enjoyment of the film.
The story was (and I guess this is in the nature of the animé origins) a TINY bit cheesy and improbable. But let's be honest, how many sci-fi films aren't written that way?
Acting was very very solid all the way through, although for those not used to the slightly overly-dramatic approach in Asian cinema it might come across as bad acting. I don't think it is. It's very theatrical.
Where the film sort of bogs down is toward the end, with a series of melodramatic "tear jerker" scenes which almost bring the last half hour to a screeching halt, though not quite.
It's a long movie, at slightly over 2 hours.
There seems to be a plethora of extras on both Blu-ray and DVD copies, though I haven't had the chance to go through them yet.
All in all, I am more than satisfied with this purchase (and Amazon delivered it a full day ahead of the original shipping date, which is always a pleasure).
it to be very good.

A great adaptation from an awesome animation show. The ending was not the best, because I'd like to see more movies!!!!!!!!!!!Published 11 months ago by Mitch Morrow
I liked the original series, but does anybody knows the languages and subtitles included in the blu-ray/DVD combo? Thanks.Published 17 months ago by Locutus
I use to watch the anime... If I had not then I probably have given it more. Have a nice day.Published 19 months ago by Clifford Kruger
