This is the recent re-release of the film, on Blu-ray.
Image quality is excellent, sound is excellent, all as one should expect from a Blu-ray release.
On to the film:
This was the first time I actually got to see it, and I never saw the original animated series. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a Japanese film, so it has the aesthetics that go along with that.
The action scenes are great.
The look of the film, the world building, the ships, were all absolutely top quality. However, here and there the actual CGI effects betrayed the lower budget available for the film, but not in a way that had any truly negative impact on enjoyment of the film.
The story was (and I guess this is in the nature of the animé origins) a TINY bit cheesy and improbable. But let's be honest, how many sci-fi films aren't written that way?
Acting was very very solid all the way through, although for those not used to the slightly overly-dramatic approach in Asian cinema it might come across as bad acting. I don't think it is. It's very theatrical.
Where the film sort of bogs down is toward the end, with a series of melodramatic "tear jerker" scenes which almost bring the last half hour to a screeching halt, though not quite.
It's a long movie, at slightly over 2 hours.
There seems to be a plethora of extras on both Blu-ray and DVD copies, though I haven't had the chance to go through them yet.
All in all, I am more than satisfied with this purchase (and Amazon delivered it a full day ahead of the original shipping date, which is always a pleasure).
