Product Description

Challenging, controversial, educational, and irreverent, the fifteenth anniversary addition to the award-winning "Spectrum" series reinforces both the importance and prevalence of fantastic art in today's culture. With exceptional images by extraordinary creators, this elegant full-colour collection showcases an international cadre of creators working in every style and medium, both traditional and digital. The best artists from the United States, Europe, China, Australia, South America and beyond have gathered into the only annual devoted exclusively to works of fantasy, horror, science fiction, and the surreal, making "Spectrum" one of the year's highly most anticipated books. With art from books, graphic novels, video games, films, galleries, and advertising, "Spectrum17" is both an electrifying art book for fans and an invaluable resource for clients looking for bright new talent. The entire field is discussed in an invaluable, found-nowhere-else Year In Review. Contact information for each artist is included in a handy index. Often imitated, never equaled, "Spectrum 17" continues the freshness and excellence that was established sixteen years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectrum back on track, Jan 27 2011
Ce commentaire est de: Spectrum 17: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art (Paperback)
Just a quick note about the latest Spectrum. Each Christmas I eagerly look forward to receiving

Spectrum 17: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art by Cathy Fenner

my annual Spectrum. I found the last two years books to be somewhat lacking. I can't put my finger on exactly what was missing, I just found that, although the art was good (as usual) there were other publications that provided a better or at least equal cross-section of S&SF art. I think that the last two years empahasized more "art in advertising" including "retro" four-poster type art. Whereas this years included a better mix including some really excellent digital art.

As always, the "Spectrum" series of books, devoted to show-casing the top fantasy illustrators working in the field today, offer an exceptional presentation from cover to cover. The quality of the paper and printing are all first class, and the artists are amazing. The featured artworks are arranged in 'thematic' sections based on the end publication format and virtually all traditional and digital media (both 2D & 3D) are represented. As is noted, this is the 17th consecutive year that Spectrum has been published. I have about 10 of the previous issues and they are ALL packed with incredible images. Totally recommended for any lover of fantasy art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great collection, Nov 14 2010

The brush-stroke style title is certainly a departure from the past. Almost couldn't recognise it as the series. The nice cover art is from Gregory Manchess. It still comes as either a paperback or hardcover edition featuring 284 pages of wonderful art work.

Volume 17 is yet another great collection. You've work from the (gold) winners: Sam Weber, Omar Rayyan, Steven Tabbutt, Daniel Dociu, Mark Newman, Chris Buzelli, Ed Binkley, Eric Fortune and many other top artists. The Grand Master Award goes to Al Williamson. You can check out the full list of artists featured on the Spectrum website.

Some of the artists who I thought had retired are actually not. It's really hard to follow these artists when sometimes they don't even have a website, or update them regularly. In Spectrum 17, you can catch up on their latest work for the year.

The usual categories are Advertising, Book, Comics, Concept Art, Dimensional, Editorial, Institutional and Unpublished. There are environment paintings, character designs, concept art, sculptures etc. Lots of different subjects and ideas created with different medium and style.

I can't say anything more that I haven't said before. Spectrum one of the best valued and inspiration art annuals around. Highly recommended to artists, art directors and anyone into fantasy art, or into fantastic art.

(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I look forward to each year's Spectrum. It's an amazing collection of truly great fantasy art. This is no exception. In fact, with more art than the past couple of years, it's an amazing look at the variety of work being produced in the field. I'd also have to say that the pieces themselves seem more interesting and more technically impressive than the past couple of years. Spectrum is a must-have for any sci-fi/fantasy art fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectrum 17, Nov 19 2010

From an illustrators point of view, one of the most diverse (sorry to differ with some opinions) Spectrums. A great mix of traditional and digital media and a nod toward the future of this business while still praising tradition. It has been exciting to see the growth and mainstream acceptance of fantastic art and illustration over the years. I can think of no better catalog of that growth than Spectrum.
