4.0 out of 5 stars Chip off the old engine block May 16 2008
By Amanda Richards HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
This DVD has the first three episodes of the 2008 television cartoon series, created expressly to promote the movie. The movie however is based on the original cartoon, the only link to this series being that the car is now a Mach 6.

The next generation is exactly that. The only character from the original series is Spritle, who is now middle aged, and Headmaster of a racing academy founded by the Racer family. The new racing champ is X Racer, the oldest son of Speed Racer, the latter having apparently disappeared, but X's thunder is about to be stolen by a new kid on the block, a young man named Speed, who grew up in an orphanage.

Speed shows up at the Academy without a race car, but with an impressive collection of fancy moves on the track, reminiscent of the famous racer with the same name. Speed's friends are Conor, a fellow student and gifted mechanic, and Lucy, another student who is very intelligent and more than a little assertive. Conor's robotic monkey, named Chim Chim after the monkey in the original series, completes the group of friends.

With lots of racing, bad guys, gadgets and fancy cars, this one seeks to continue in the tire tracks of the original series. I'm guessing that the animation is intentionally old fashioned, because it looks a bit cheesy for a modern day cartoon, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, mainly because my son likes it. There have been two more episodes since this was released, so maybe there will be more DVDs to follow. Considering that I've just had to buy all five DVDs from the original series, my wallet is not amused.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a terrible, extremely low budget show April 28 2008
By M. Murphey - Published on Amazon.com
I watched the first episode of this show on Nick this weekend, and it was a flat-out embarrassment. The show looks like a homemade web cartoon...and honestly, that's an insult to some homemade web cartoons. The fact that a major Hollywood summer blockbuster is backed by an animated series that is this poor is just a shame.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could give this series a 5 star review. I'm sure there are some others who will enjoy it more than I did, but 5 stars is just out of the question with something this poorly done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Speed Racer the Next Generation - The Beginning .... Mar 3 2009
By blackaciddevil - Published on Amazon.com
It's clear from the get-go that this show is geared more towards younger fans than how the original show was. Still, Speed Racer the Next Generation - The Beginning is a fun romp that fans of the original will enjoy as well as those new to the series.

Speed Racer the Next Generation - The Beginning tells the story of Speed, an orphan who gets to join an elite racing academy to learn how to be a great racer. There, he meets Conor and Lucy as well as X whom he later learns is his brother. Spritle from the old tv series is headmaster of the academy in this show. But, the evil Zile Zazic is the series protagonist who is trying to get his hands on the Mach 6. Things get pretty interesting in this barely over an hour animated film.

While it probably won't appeal to original Speed Racer fans, it will appeal to the younger set. Honestly, though, I enjoyed it very much.
