Product Description

From Amazon.com

This compelling portrait of Las Vegas subculture stars Jesse Bradford (Bring It On, Clockstoppers) as Johnny, a teenager who aspires to be a racecar driver but gets stuck hustling on the Vegas strip. Speedway Junky centers around Johnny's friendship with Eric (Jordon Brower, Texas Rangers), a gay hustler who's in love with Johnny, even though he knows Johnny is straight. But the movie also captures snapshots of various fringe dwellers and people whose lives seem to be hitting a dead end, deftly drawn portraits that mix hope and despair in equal measures. The well-written script and strong performances from an eclectic cast--including appearances by Daryl Hannah, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, all of whom are excellent--make Speedway Junky more than a voyeuristic walk through the Vegas gutter. --Bret Fetzer

Every dream has its price... From Executive Producer Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester) comes another compelling story of a teenage dreamer. Johnny (Jesse Bradford, Clockstoppers) has run away from home to pursue his fantasy to race cars--but he runs into trouble and out of money in Las Vegas. Gay street hustler Eric (Jordan Brower, Teen Angel) befriends Johnny and introduces him to his gang, including brash Steven (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Home Improvement) and charming Wilma (Tiffani Thiessen, Beverly Hills 90210). Johnny also meets Eric's surrogate mom Veronica (Daryl Hannah, Splash). As the two boys become close, they are confronted with a life-threatening situation involving drugs, money, and betrayal, and Johnny must decide if he has what it takes to follow his dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Objective/Non-Objective, Mar 10 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Speedway Junky (Widescreen) (DVD)
This Movie took me by suprise actually. Even if it may be hard to believe the speed of progression of the events in the Movie, it does overshadow the less observed emotional requisitions of different worldy individuals out there in the world. If you ask me, it's even an uglier world than protrayed which holds to the idea of one persons acceptance and sould (mate) searching.

2.0 out of 5 stars Never quite believable, Nov 25 2003

This review is from: Speedway Junky (Widescreen) (DVD)
Despite gritty subject matter, an attractive and competent young cast, and Gus Van Sant as executive producer, this film never quite comes together. Johnny, a naive 18 year old with dreams of becoming a race-car driver, finds himself alone and penniless in Las Vegas. He is taken in by a gay hustler named Eric and his unofficial adopted mother, and begins hustling himself in order to make enough money to finance his trip to North Carolina. During his stay, he learns the ropes of prostitution, meets plenty of strange and unsavory characters, and develops ambiguous feelings for Eric, who is in love with him. Unfortunately, neither the story or the characters are ever really quite believable, especially the unrequited love between Johnny and Eric. The problem may be that the film can't seem to decide whether it wants to be gritty and realistic or surreal and over-the-top. For a far superior portrayal of prostitution and ambiguous male sexuality, I'd recommend Gus Van Sant's own excellent "My Own Private Idaho".

1.0 out of 5 stars Cliche and depressing, Oct 29 2003
By
This review is from: Speedway Junky (Widescreen) (DVD)
So this movie really has little going for it unless you count the features of the male leads. Seriously, most of the situtations and plot points are totally cliche and the ending is uncessarily cruel to gay viewers. The fact that any feelings of love in this drama are not returned by one character make it a film that teases the gay audience and eventually slams them. Best avoid.
