Review

With their evocative gothic-style pencil drawings and color illustrations, rhyming riddles, supernatural lore, and well-drawn characters, these books read like old-fashioned ripping yarns." -- New York Times Book Review

Product Description

Five captivating books!
One thrilling adventure!

It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: "We just want people to know about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone." Little could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures. The oddest part is that in entering that world, they didn't leave this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh please don't say these books aren't worth $90, Dec 4 2007

This review is from: Spiderwick Chronicles: The Complete First Serial (Hardcover)
for starters I read each of these books to my children and they were totally engrossed. I read to my children everynight, so we've been through a LOT of books!!! However THE SPIDEWICK CHRONICLES was the one series my children could not get enough of. My son wore his clothes inside out for weeks. If I had to do it over and pay $90 it is $90 well spent!! We loved them. My children and I have this system that when we finish a book each of us records in the front of the book what we thought of the book, these books got raved reviews from my children(Daughter 10 and Son 7).

This all in one is a great bargain...I doubt anyone would regret the purchase.

Once my son started reading the series he could not put them down, and as a parent of a reluctant reader, it pleased me greatly!

The Spiderwick Chronicles, a beautifully written fantasy world brought to life by amazingly detailed illustrations, is a wonderful series! Unlike "Harry Potter" or even "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books, the targeted audience is 6 to 10 year olds; however, older readers will also find the story worth reading, as my son 12 did.

I believe the original format was well worth the cost. The bite size novels are not daunting for the younger reading set, and the illustrations engage the reader throughout.

1.0 out of 5 stars Money grab, Nov 19 2007

The Spiderwick Chronicles series is a set of five books that I paid $18.00 per book for. Had the five books been put into one book, then the story would have been decent. The writers broke up a little story into five books, as though they put a few chapters of the whole story into each small book. In some of the five books, not much really happens...it was merely a way to make some more money from an unsuspecting public. The total cost to read this so-so story was $90!! This series of books was just a rip off. The Harry Potter books were excellent, five times the length and a fraction of the cost - plus a far better read.
