Product Description

Canadians visit chiropractors about 30 million times a year, and surveys show that patients are generally satisfied with their treatment. But studies also show that as many as two hundred Canadians a year suffer strokes brought on by neck manipulation. Spin Doctors takes a hard, dramatic, and spine-chilling look into the world of chiropractic medicine. You will be surprised to learn what chiropractors treat and why and how much it costs you as a taxpayer. Most importantly, you'll learn how to protect yourself and your family from dangerous adjustments, practice-building tactics, bogus treatments, and misleading information.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confused about the facts, Sep 26 2011
By
This review is from: Spin Doctors: The Chiropractic Industry Under Examination (Paperback)
In just a few minutes on Google I was able to pull up far more unbiased info on this topic than the author presents throughout the whole book. I was hoping to gain some insight into the chiropractic profession because I have several friends that recommend them for various complaints but I like to make my decisions based on facts as well. I found a massive study sanctioned by the United Nations and the World Health Organization called the Neck Pain Task Force Report. It tells a very different story than what is presented in this book. In all fairness this book was published before this study was released. I think the author is using fear and sensationalism to make a buck, but that's pretty common in this day and age. A confused and disappointing read.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK information, somewhat disorganized., Feb 22 2006

This review is from: Spin Doctors: The Chiropractic Industry Under Examination (Paperback)
The information presented is fine, just to check I went back and read a number of the cited studies. The major problems are with it's organization. For example the book will move from talking about a general principle, to a case study that doesn't really make the point and finally to some general data. Too often it strays from making a straight up point "Here is what most Chiropractors do" to showing a specific case "Here is what this one Chiropractor does". But then again perahps thats part of the message: That Chriopractic is a mixed bag of ideas.

That said, single cases are interesting but don't make a general point. Which is what you would want from a book about Chiropractic medicine in Ontario. Mind you considering how much Chriopractic depends on the case study it's amazing that they don't find this book remarkably compelling.

Some of the bits that are interesting are:

- Showing how many Chiropractors in Ontario treat for infantile Cholic and how a double blinded study demonstrated that Chiropractic isn't any better than a placebo in this respect.
- Demonstrating how the claims of safety of neck manipulations depend on estimating a rather large unknown. Some studies showing as much as 1:400,000 having serious complications rather than the often stated: 1:2-3 Million.
- Showing that subluxations are so vaguely defined that they are actually more measuring effect than cause.

3.0 out of 5 stars Learning the truth about Chiropractic, May 23 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Spin Doctors: The Chiropractic Industry Under Examination (Paperback)
This book is beneficial and is as balanced as truth can be about chiropractic. Very little objective information is available on chiropractic. I am a doctor and truthfully feel we would all be better off without wasting government money on the minimally helpful practice.
