Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

The Blind Boys of Alabama are one of the longest-running popular music ensembles on earth--vocalist Clarence Fountain has been leading their exuberant gospel harmonising since 1939. However, Spirit of the Century sounds anything but a museum piece. It is, in fact, as fresh and vital a record as could be imagined. This is partly down to a judicious selection of material--just as Johnny Cash has reaffirmed his worth by turning his hand to material by relative upstarts such as Nick Cave and Will Oldham, so the Blind Boys of Alabama cover Tom Waits ("Jesus Gonna Be Here", "Down in the Hole"), Ben Harper ("Give a Man a Home") and The Rolling Stones ("Just Wanna See His Face"). Splendid though their versions of all of these are, the real strength of Spirit of the Century is the impeccably delivered gospel standards. The venerable antiques "Motherless Child", "Good Religion" and "Amazing Grace"--the latter arranged to fit the guitar riff from "House of the Rising Sun"--all sound as sprightly and vigorous as if they were written yesterday. --Andrew Mueller

Chronique amazon.fr

À preuve leur version a cappella de "The Last Time" des Rolling Stones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Good Bluesy Gospel Here!!, July 21 2001

Glory, Glory! The Blind Boys of Alabama are kickin' on "Spirit of the Century"! The music world has never known Gospel any better. With a real bluesy kinda feel, this cd earned it's permanant spot in my 25-disc cd player. My Pioneer's are rockin! The Boys have been harmonizing since 1936, in which they met at the Talladega Institue for the Blind. This cd just did something for my spirit....ya know what I mean. Probably the better known song on this one is Amazing Grace, but this is no Amazing Grace like you've ever heard before. To the tune of House of the Rising Sun, there is something special about this song. It mesmerized me. It's just beautiful! I first heard this particular song on Dave Letterman.....yep, that's right, Dave. I knew I had to get it! Essentialy, these are old Spirituals kicked up a few notches! The Blind Boys of Alabama are Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter, George Scott and Joey Williams. Joining them on this cd is Michael Jerome on Drums, David Lindley on Oud & Electric & Slide Guitars, Danny Thompson on Double Bass, Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and John Hammond on Dobro & Electric Guitar. The only accapella song on the cd is fittingly the last song, "The Last Time." I have a few other cd's of the The Blind Boys, but I believe this is my favorite. They have spent most of thier lives, traveling, singing and sharing Jesus through their music. They've often been highlighted at several House of Blues and drawn many to their music and their message. If you're looking for some good Gospel, your search has ended. Two words: COOL TUNES! Get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Different Take on Spiritual Songs, Jan 20 2003

The one rendition of Amazing Grace sung to the tune "House of the Rising Sun" is so powerful that this song alone is worth buying the cd. These guys were introduced to me by a friend, and I'm hooked. Blues and spirituality -- that's the real thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Spirit, Feb 26 2002

This is excellent stuff, a collection of unfussy, full gospel renditions of material that runs the gamut from the traditional to Tom Waits. The arrangements are clean, but simple, mostly making way for the vocal interplay among the members of this group that has performed together (the album says) since 1939, when they came together at the Talladega Institute for the Blind. A cover of Tom Waits' "Jesus Gonna Be Here," overheard on a juke box, is what made me buy this, and it sounds just as good on repeated play. I'm also partial to the soaring "No More," the country blues of "Good Religion." Fans of Moby's "Play" will recognize "Run On For A Long Time," a version of which appears on that that album as "Run On." The vast majority of the record is quite appealing -- for me the main exceptions were the version of "Amazing Grace," and a cover of "Give a Man A Home," the Ben Harper song. For the most part, a great introduction to gospel sounds.
