2.0 out of 5 stars Muddied Spiritual Water April 19 2012
Writing this review is difficult. Reading Spirit Fighter was, at times, difficult.

The writing in Spirit Fighter is descriptive, engaging and fast-paced, but it's the subject matter that I find disturbing. Having a Pentecostal background and having experienced some upsetting spiritual conflicts in the past, I was disturbed to see such a graphic book created for children (ages 9 and up). Perhaps I am over-sensitive, but I do not want my middle-school-aged children to have the severity of the spiritual realm brought so vividly to life. Do my children know there are angels and demons? Yes. Do they know they have God and his armour to protect them? Yes. Do I want them seeing demons behind every tree and possessing strangers on the subway? NO. I do not believe that this last statement is truly the case, but since Spirit Fighter describes it to be so, it would be hard for my kids to distinguish between reality and fantasy after reading the book.

This book is being touted as a replacement for Percy Jackson and The Kane Chronicles'a Christian fantasy alternative. With Jackson and Kane, the fantasy is clear and I have yet to meet a child who would confuse it for reality. Spirit Fighter takes a spiritual reality and muddies the water by having a child need to be one quarter angel to have power enough to defeat the enemy. The name of Jesus is all that anyone needs. Period.

I had high hopes for Spirit Fighter, but it will not be a book for my children or any other children that I know.

I give this book 2 stars out of 5.

I received this book free from BookSneeze. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book Oct. 11 2011
By Eric Benjamin - Published on Amazon.com
Great book that makes the Bible exciting and thought provoking. My child asked us a number of questions about the bible and bible verses. In addition to everything else, it was just a fantastic story. My son (10 years old) could not put it down for two days until he was finished.

He can't wait for the next one! Or the movie!!

(Review written by my 9-year-old who couldn't put the book down!) I love this book because it's a very good book about good and evil. It has a very good ending with angelic and demonic wars. It talks a lot about God and how He works. It's one of my favorites of all time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank Peretti for a younger generation Oct. 17 2011
By Spence Wright - Published on Amazon.com
I grew up enjoying Frank Peretti's "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" as books that give insight into the spiritual realm but I've always felt that they are a little too intense and suspenseful for younger readers. Jerel Law has hit a grand slam with this book! First of all, it's a great read. I finished the book in one night! Most importantly though, I was very impressed by the level of spiritual insight that comes through in the book. Finally, something I can recommend to my younger nieces and nephews who are always reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books! Well done Jerel!

3.0 out of 5 stars Author Winds Up a Bit on the "Preachy" Side of Fine Line for Christian Novels May 15 2012
By CrimsonGirl - Published on Amazon.com

As a Christian parent, I *LOVED* the concept of "Spirit Fighter". My kids enjoy reading fantasy/adventure books, and the idea of a Christian addition to the genre was very appealing. Having the main characters be half nephilim I thought was a creative way to illustrate to young people the inner battle between temptation and love of God. I truly wanted to be able to give this book 5 stars and an unqualified recommendation. Unfortunately, I just can't.

Christian fiction writers have to walk a very fine line in their books when it comes to incorporating the Christian elements. The best Christian novels are those that teach without being overly preachy. C.S. Lewis' "Narnia" series is the best example of this. It is thoroughly Christian but not in a "beat the reader over the head" kind of way. Lewis relies on subtlety and allegory rather than stopping the action every few pages to have his characters quote from Scripture. The parts I liked most about "Spirit Fighter" were when Jerel Law took a more subtle approach. The scene where Jonah and Eliza fight off spiritual despair while walking through "the Ramble" was excellent, for example. It illustrates the power of faith in God without coming off as preachy.

I hope for the next book in his series, Rev. Law does much less sermonizing. His novel would be more effective in accomplishing his goal of reaching young people if he took his cue from St. Francis of Assisi, who famously said, "Preach the Gospel always; use words when necessary." Have the characters quote the Bible more sparingly, and generally try to be a lot more understated in getting across the Christian message. Don't squander this opportunity to evangelize by being too blatantly preachy about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Oct. 23 2011
By Shayla - Published on Amazon.com
The book is an easy read and it is exciting. The characters are intriguing and although the book is rated for teen and young adult audiences, I loved reading it as well. The book is along the same lines as Peretti whose books have been among some of my favorites. These books are ones that I believe most young readers will love and they can learn about the real spiritual wars that are raging around us.
