Product Description

From Amazon.com

Horse lovers young and old will celebrate this utterly enjoyable and marvelous-looking animated film. The titular stallion runs free in the Cimarron (New Mexico) wilderness until a series of men try to master the proud horse, leading to adventures through a U.S. Cavalry fort, Native American settlements, and a railroad camp. Despite a heavy dose of political correctness and realism (the animals don't talk; we only hear Spirit's internal monologue, voiced by Matt Damon), directors Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook give their hero many only-in-a-movie moments, including an action sequence rivaling any of Rambo's escapes. The stirring mix of 2-D and 3-D animation is absolutely stunning and aptly fueled by composer Hans Zimmer's synthesized score. The film earns one demerit for '80s rocker Bryan Adams's abundant songs--a different singer could have brought more to the film. Rated G but there is some rough treatment of horses shown, so nix the sensitive preschoolers. --Doug Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked it, my children loved it., Mar 20 2004
By A Customer
My daughters ages 6 and 11 watch the movie frequently. The music and animation are wonderful and the story is good enough. What I detest in kids' animated films is the increasing use of character deaths and sadistic incomprehensible violence. My children cried on the way home after ICE AGE, especially my youngest, because they could't shake the sense of loss over the mastadon's family. Nemo's mother is killed in the first minutes of Saving Nemo. Couldn't he have just had a nervious Dad? Monster's Inc. has a little girl strapped to a machine that is going to suck the breath out of her. We see her terrified face and hear her screams. Why? These movies are not documentaries -- people had to make the choice to include these scenes. I cannot imagine what they were thinking.

Thankfully, Spirit has none of this disturbing content. There is conflict and separation but things come out ok. I would recommend it for purchase if you like good animation and/or if you have kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kids watched it 7 times in one weekend., Mar 9 2004

I always rent a movie for a week, to see if it's worth buying. My kids are 6 and 8 years old. I rented 2 movies on a Friday, and let them watch them as often as they wished (it was early in the year, and homework was light). By Monday they had watched Spirit 7 times. Monday afternoon, they watched it again with their grandmother. On Tuesday, I made them watch the other movie, which was a wash-out (I don't even remember what it was). You can guess what they watched Wednesday. I am definitely adding Spirit to our home video library. I am especially fond of the song "Here I am."

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful movie, Feb 22 2004
