I bought this after seeing a concert where she presented 5 songs from her new album Verse (in June 2002) and I listened to this on the way home. And I thought to myself "this is clearly the same person that I just heard, but what I like about her is embryonic here."

This is 100% Patricia Barber. Fascinating. Complex. Tricky. Funny. Playful. But it hasn't been sharpened to be what I love about this woman's music so much. If you like Patricia Barber, you should get this for completeness and for an appreciation of what she's about and how she's grown (and see's her music now). But don't expect the same thing as her other works.

After listening to Modern Cool, Cafe Blue and Distortion of Love, and the live gigs at the Mill, Split is a treasure, like a secret; like peeking into the past and recognizing the greatness to come. I love this woman.
