Book Description

Oct 15 2012
The way a horse is physically built—its conformation—reveals a lot about the discipline for which it is best suited, and this reference provides detailed advice on selecting horses specifically for competition in internationally recognized sports. Sport horse breeding authority Christian Schacht presents a new and easy-to-use system for evaluating the conformation of the sport horse, with special attention on dressage, jumping, and eventing prospects. Amateur and professional riders, breeders, veterinarians, trainers, and judges will all benefit from this method based on recognizing professionally accepted proportions and lines, allowing a well-trained eye to ascertain a horse’s strengths and weaknesses and therefore correctly determine its training and fitness regimens.

Product Description

Review

"This book is intended by the author to help the expert with accurate description, the breeder with the selection of a mare's mate, the veterinarian with easier diagnoses, and the judge to recognize the 'ideal.' Amply illustrated with 171 color photos and diagrams, the book is divided into detailed section on horse evaluation tools, the overall appearance of the horse, the front end, the body, and the hind end." —Lone Star Horse Report (January 2013)

"There are innumerable books on horse conformation, but this one stands out because of author Christian Schacht's perspective. Schacht revies each part of the horse's body, detailing the biomechanics, ideal angles and training and management strategies to compensate for conformational deficiencies." —Practical Horseman (April 2013)

I could take or leave this book. I read it cover to cover, and was somewhat disappointed. I found the text leaves something to be desired in terms of clarity. The diagrams/photos were not much better with their often vague captions.

I like that the author shows quantitative means of measuring the conformation of the horse compared to athletic abilities. This way the reader has a near exact means of discerning the potential of each horse critiqued.

Well written with good photos and very intense explanations. Not for the faint of heart to read! Some of the author's points are arguable but pretty much an educational book.

This is the best book on sporthorse conformation, especially how it relates to functionality. Definitely worth a read and it should be a reference for any sporthorse breeder.
