To begin with, Grouplove's debut album "Never Trust a Happy Song" was a bit of a slow grower for me. Once I got into it though, I loved it! Definitely one of the best debut albums I've ever heard. They demonstrated a variety of styles and influences, and that's present on "Spreading Rumours" as well. Perhaps the most notable difference for me between albums is this one feels a little bit rushed. The lyrics are a bit too repetitive on certain songs (Biting the Bullet, Sit Still) and it disrupts the otherwise strong track list.
The strongest tracks are the lead single, "Ways to Go", as well as "Shark Attack", "Hippy Hill", and "News to Me". What makes "Hippy Hill" so good is the abrupt tonal shift midway through the track. It's a nice touch, one that emphasizes the risks Grouplove is willing to take in creating music.
I'm a huge fan of this band. They seem truly ambitious, inventive, and skillful in their song arrangements and execution. Not many modern bands sound THIS GOOD! It's a shame they haven't gained the attention they deserve. Here's to hoping this album gets them a broader fanbase.
If you enjoy Silversun Pickups, (early) Flaming Lips, or Cage the Elephant, give this album a try.
