From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Life in L.A.'s fast lane, from Sherman Oaks' porn studios to swank Beverly Hills salons, sets the pace for Halliday's debut novel, the first installment in a stylish High Heels mystery series. When shoe designer Maddie Springer finds her boyfriend, Richard, has gone missing, along with $20 million of his company's funds, she's determined to track him down—partly because she's certain he's innocent, but mostly because her period is late. Maddie persuades her best friend, Dana, to be her partner in crime solving, and it isn't long before they stumble on the body of Richard's boss—just moments after he's been shot dead. Enter sexy LAPD detective Jack Ramirez, who just wants Maddie to "go home and let him handle this," which, of course, isn't going to happen. The only clues to the murder are two blond hairs and the imprint of a stiletto heel, pointing to a female killer; topping the suspect list is receptionist and designer fashion junkie Jasmine, followed by porn-star Bunny, who's up to her implants in debt. The nonstop action runs the gambit from faulty EPTs to wild rides on L.A.'s freeways to wedding plans gone awry, all of which are guaranteed to keep chick lit and mystery fans happy. (Aug.)

I could not put it down Spying in High Heels, the first book in Gemma Halliday's High Heels Mysteries series. In fact, I liked it so much that I'm already onto the second book in the series!

Maddie Springer is almost living the perfect LA life. She has a great job as a shoe designer - if only it weren't children's shoes that she was designing. She has a great boyfriend - except she can't seem to find him. Eager to discuss a matter of utmost importance with him, Maddie takes it upon herself to track down her missing boyfriend, and inadvertently stumbles upon a murder in the process. Her efforts to locate her boyfriend keep her crossing paths with sexy Detective Ramirez, who is investigating the murder and wishes Maddie would just get out of his way.

Maddie is a little bit Stephanie Plum and a little bit Carrie Bradshaw all rolled up into one fun, and entertaining package. Her best friend Dana is a hilarious addition to the story, and Detective Ramirez fills the hot, broody male quota. Halliday's writing is smart and the story zips along quickly and easily. Spying in High Heels is a funny and fast paced adventure in amateur sleuthing that you won't be able to put down, and an excellent start to a new series!

3.0 out of 5 stars On the Fence About Maddy Feb. 8 2014
By Debra Purdy Kong TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
As a fashion designer for children’s shoes, Maddy Springer has a fairly uncomplicated life until her lawyer boyfriend Richard goes missing. Maddy’s determined to find him, but her quest reveals some nasty secrets about Richard. Still, Maddy perseveres to the chagrin of police officer Jack Ramirez, who suspects that Richard is involved with embezzlement and murder. Although Maddy and Jack don’t see eye to eye, there is a strong attraction between the two. Maddy’s conscience won’t let her pursue her desire, though, given that she might be pregnant with Richard’s baby. As Maddy’s sleuthing antics escalate, she also has to deal with her mother’s upcoming wedding, which isn’t unfolding according to plan.

Spying in High Heels is the first in a series featuring an impetuous, immature protagonist who often becomes a dumb blonde cliché. Her willingness to take stupid risks without thinking things through was irritating, yet there were moments when her sleuthing was also funny. Some readers will groan at the idiotic things she does, while others will find her hilarious. I’m still on the fence about whether I’ll read another Maddy novel. I would have to be in the mood for an ultra light cozy mixed with some silliness. The whodunnit component to the book wasn’t overly complicated either, but in Maddy’s world overly complex just wouldn’t work.

3.0 out of 5 stars fun read Jan. 9 2014

I really enjoyed this book and loved the main character. She is quirky and her antics are funny. And overall, I agree with everything the first reviewer has said and find Gemma Halliday`s work worth a read as they are fun, lighthearted, and an easy read. So, why not a 5 star. Because as a prolific writer, her editting is really bad. I would not want to spend money on her books until this omission is addressed. Run-on sentences, incoherent sentences, and missing punctuation should not be acceptable in published writings if they are to be taken as serious works of literature.

Really fun mystery! Very well written--most "humorous" mysteries leave me cold, but this one truly brought me smiles with every turn of the page. I did NOT guess whodunnit--this book kept me guessing right to the end.,

If you're into details, skip this one. One minute, she's wearing flats with her librarian outfit, the next heels. Her mother's wedding is on Saturday, the next day it's a weekday. She keeps calling people on their home phones, instead of their cell phones (WHY???? If it's a murder case, WHY call people on their home phones or only give out your home number instead of cell number?). Three days pass, but she calls it 48 hours. The bachelorette party is tonight (as her Faux Dad calls to remind her) and she tells herself she needs to call her best friend and ask her to go with her to the bachelorette party tomorrow night. I could go on and on, but I won't. There are so many more FREE Kindle books that aren't this messed up. I can't even finish reading this one.

Wow! What a fabulous first book for this very talented author!! I am so impressed that someone new can leap off the block with a first book and show this much talent! Gemma Halliday has a wonderful future ahead of her. This book is as well written..actually, better written than many experienced authors today. It is a very fun read, great comedy, a totally fresh and energetic character to follow through the dialogue, and so very likable. The who-dun-it was indeed a mystery until the not who I expected!! I can't wait until the next one is out...I am soooo ready to read more by this inspired new author:)
