3.0 out of 5 stars Encumbered by an old-fashioned battle system May 7 2013
Format:Video Game
I originally said that I wouldn't complete this game based on the agonizing grind and slow pace of the first three chapters. Nothing happens, people have scenes but they don't talk to each other, and it seems like 10-12 hours real time invested in what amounts to countless battle after battle. The graphics are very good but that alone can't carry a game.

But then it starts to get interesting in chapter 4, and although it is still linear gameplay there is at least some gratification and reward for your efforts thus far. By this time you should have started upgrading your own abilities and your weapons because it will definitely be required from this point on. The characters start rooting out their problems and growing up. The story is starting to mean something.

However, one glaring problem is that this battle system is not really turn-based, but rather it keeps the clock running, so it depends on your ability to use menus very quickly... While you're fumbling for a potion you will still be taking hits from the enemies and then it would be too late. You do not even have any defence or evasion. You just stand there and take it. This system reeks of old-school game design where controllers only had a d-pad and two buttons. It's a disservice to modern players to not use gaming hardware the way it was meant to be used. That is, these battles should be more direct action like those in Tales Of Vesperia or Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Even Ni No Kuni has time-dependent menu-naviigation but at least your player can move out of the line of fire. No, Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is encumbering to the player and the developers really need to take this into account. Because it makes for an unfair game and who wants to play an unfair game?

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish it was less linear March 31 2011
Format:Video Game
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Haven't beaten the game yet, I am at the open area but it too so friggen long to get there. Way to linear for way too long! Its a shame because the combat and graphics are amazing.

-> All but one of the chapters in the games is not just a linear path.
-> No side quests except for the one non-linear chapter.
-> No towns to speak of.
-> You automatically lose if the party leader (of 3 people) dies, even though if any other member goes down a simple revive spell would work.
->The game battle system is not very complex, hitting a is the key to victory for 80% of the game, and takes 30 hours to unlock.
->The last chapter of the game is padded out.
-> Story is aimless for most of the game, the characters finally make a decision, then go the opposite at the conclusion of the game, ends with a deus machina.
-> No real meaningful upgrade decisions, for 80% of the game you are limited to what you can upgrade, once the game allows you to upgrade any class you want the xp requirements for those classes are so prohibitive compared to the ones it wants you to use, there is no real option.
-> No battle music, the ambient area music keeps playing in battle, a minor gripe, but hard to get excited for battles.
-> Skip this and play XIII-2 it fixes most of this games issues.
-> Only real plus to the game was the quality of the audio and visuals, but even there the same 12 enemy types are recycled throughout the game with simple palette swaps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but kind of automatic Feb. 17 2014
By Aravind
Format:Video Game
Story: 8/10 - One of the best Final Fantasy storylines. It's somewhat confusing though. The cast is also very likable,
Gameplay: 6.3/10 - Make sure you set abilities above of auto battle in the options menu. Auto battle was a terrible idea because it makes every fight extremely automatic. You can give it the lowest priority via the options menu, but the fact that it's there is just bad. Also, every level on the first two discs is extremely linear.
Graphics: 10/10 - Beautiful. Character models and levels are extremely detailed.
Sound: 8.5/10 - Has the second best Final Fantasy soundtrack, after VIII. Great voice acting as well.

Verdict - 8/10 - If you can look past the extremely linear levels on the first two discs, you'll love this game.

If you are a fan of the final fantasy world, XIII does not disappoint.

Final Fantasy XIII has a great story line that I've come to except from any FF game.

Recommended to seasoned players or n00bs.

Final Fantasy XIII gets a lot of hate but it truly is a very good game. They only bad thing about Final Fantasy XIII is the linear levels. So the game has bad exploration until disc three until you reach disc three which has some open levels. Aside from the linearity, everything else is great! The cast is likable, the battles are fun, and the graphics are gorgeous. The story may require some reading from the data log. The battle system's greatness isn't shown until chapter three. Until then the battles are pretty basic and kinda boring. It shouldn't take you too long to get to chapter three though. If you're willing to accept most of the changes that this game brings in then you'll have a grand time playing Final Fantasy XIII!
