Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Elvis really didn't make any great albums in the 1970s; he made one or two good ones as well as some great singles and individual album tracks, which is why the 70s box set Walk a Mile in My Shoes is as good a buy as the 50s and 60s compilations. He also made a slew of live albums--so which ones to pick? Obviously, the 1968 NBC "comeback" was special, and various recordings exist; still, it's better viewed as a video. The 1972 Madison Square Garden recordings and 1973's Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite often seem zombie-like, and it's basically downhill from there. Thus, it's a toss-up between In Person at the International Hotel, his rockin' first Vegas appearance following his "comeback" TV special, and the Vegas appearance on this CD, recorded a year later--and offering more unique musical fruits. It's Elvis doing songs associated with others (Engelbert Humperdinck, Neil Diamond, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Beatles), though "The Wonder of You" became a hit single. The band is hot: just listen to James Burton's scorching guitar solo on the cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway". The background vocalists are sensational (they help make Elvis's cover of "Let It Be Me" the definitive version), and the whole thing sounds Phil Spector-esque. In fact, "The Wonder of You" sounds so angelic, it's hard to believe it's live. --Bill Holdship

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than the Madison Square Garden CD, Mar 30 2009
I've been on an Elvis kick and wanted to get some of his live CD's (which means 70's era). I read good reviews for Madison Square Gardens, On Stage and In Person. The latter was expensive and had fewer songs, so I ordered the other 2 for about $10 each from the States (instead of Amazon.ca).

In my opinion, On Stage was the better of the 2 CD's, in terms of overall performance and level of energy. Both CD's offered some unique songs, not readily found elsewhere. Elvis and the band are very tight and rockin' On Stage... they're sloppier and rawer at the Gardens.

I've always loved the Aloha From Hawaii concert (I recommend getting the remastered CD with the 5 bonus songs) --- the band is very tight, but the songs are more production and less "rock" oriented than on these 2 CD's.

I liked the liner notes explanation of why Elvis did so many cover songs during the 70's. I don't like all of his covers (especially "Yesterday/ Hey Jude" and I don't like him doing doing heartless versions of his 50's songs ("Hound Dog") either.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a single perfect live 70's Elvis concert. You'll have to take great bits from several concerts and put them together.

5.0 out of 5 stars out standing polk salad, Dec 6 2003
By schackdaddy (www.schackdaddy.com) - See all my reviews
with is 1970 release we get extra bonus tracks...which gives the listener his money's worth. i bought the album when 1st released, however, this album was released on quadraphonic 8 track, this version should be the version that was reeleased on to c.d...elvis is in fine form, lot's of energy and bmg-rca has mad good efforts to clean up the soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh those memories!, Aug 24 2003

(REAL NAME)
Yes, this was one of my favs back in the 70's and i still have the Vinyl record. Now I got the CD, I am a bit disappointed. Some, but not all of the additional tracks are great, 'In the Ghetto' is the best.
But what about the sound quality?? I did expect some improvement on this remastered CD, however I believe the record company did not care much the sound quality. The vinyl is still better !!
