Book Description

Jun 26 2012 H&W Investigations Novels
Vampires, werewolves, mages - the Others are very real, and wreaking havoc in Shiarra Waynest's life. But now, she's retuming the favour...Once, she was one of the good guys - or as close as a New York P.I. can get. Then Shiarra Waynest was drawn into the world of the Others. Every faction has its own loyalties and agenda. And Shia's recent betrayal by her ex-boyfriend means that she may be on the verge of becoming a rogue werewolf at the next full moon...Of course, with all the threats against her, Shia's not sure she'll live long enough to find out. The enigmatic vampire Royce wants her back in his clutches, as do two powerful werewolf packs, along with the police. Instead of going into hiding, Shia is enlisting the aid of her enchanted hunter's belt and every dirty P.I. trick she knows. If she's going down, she'll take out as many of her enemies as she can - and hope that in the process, she keeps whatever humanity she has left...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sequel! Aug 24 2012

Shia is now facing her worst nightmare after being possibly contaminated by a werewolf. She has until the next full moon to discover if she'll turn furry and she won't waste a minute. Uniting with the questionable White Hats, she will hunt down Chaz and his pack, looking for revenge.

Before I get on with my review, I just want to disclose that I am a cameo character in this novel, Cindy Bacon, a werewolf. It doesn't influence my opinion as I have been a fan of the series since the first book, but I thought it only fair to mention it.

Now let's get down to business! Stalking The Others was as entertaining and as action-packed as the previous books of the H&W Investigations novels, but I found that Shia was really lonely. The White Hats are backing her on her quest, but I felt like she was all on her own, with only Isaac (her magic belt) to keep her company. It wasn't an issue really, but I missed Arnold and Royce. On the other hand, her loneliness allowed her some growth, which is always appreciated.

The novel takes place within a one month's period of time but it really felt like time flew by. Between Shia's worries, insecurities, violent episodes and her different quests, she kept really busy and we didn't have time to get bored.

The crescendo leading to the end was simply amazing. It was highly dramatic yet hilarious in a way. It's like madness right before the inevitable and I truly enjoyed it. Shia's final encounter with Royce was extremely surprising and oh-so-satisfying!

We get to know in this novel if Shia turns or not, but I have this tingly feeling that things aren't as simple as they seem. I'm sure Jess Haines still has a trick or two up her sleeve and I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing hit us like a brick wall in the next instalment.

On a side note, I wasn't a fan of the first covers in this series (I actually disliked them), but I like Stalking The Others' and I can't wait to see the next one.

Forsaken by the Others is due next year I think, and I can't wait to read it!

1.0 out of 5 stars So what Royce is hot? All those people are still dead July 27 2012

There is only one person in this book who suggests that becoming a serial killer and going on a mass murder spree is over-reacting to your boyfriend cheating on you. Of course everyone else in the room looks at him like he's talking crazy-talk..

SPOILERS

Look, sure we learn that the belt has been influencing Shiarra, but she started screwing up unforgivably during the werewolf retreat last book, when apparently she had had no reason to wear the belt or go hunting for a good while. That's when she attacked Chaz with a deadly silver arrow, putting her into "Fatal Attraction" territory. Hint: Glenn Close was not the hero of that movie.

Royce getting the belt off of her and ending her murder rampage does not bring back any of the people she killed, neither does a night of hot sex. The only way she can come even close to redeeming herself is to pull a "Xena" and spend the rest of her life trying to atone for what she has done. Until she mans up and takes responsibility, I can't have any respect for her, and I feel like I wasted my time following her story.

2.0 out of 5 stars ummm July 17 2012

I'm sorry to say but this series as officially lost its appeal for me. I very much enjoyed the first two books in this series, but the third book was a DNF. I felt that Shiarra's head was lost in the clouds while dire things were happening. She ignored several warnings that only resulted in more trouble. I don't like it when an author creates drama or conflict at the expense of their character.

Fortunately, I was able to get through STALKING THE OTHERS but just didn't care very much with what happened to Shiarra. She has officially lost her appeal. I found myself liking some parts, but then dozing off in others. There's a ton of unnecessary internal dialogue that I think can be filtered out. I skimmed a lot.

While I show indifference to Shiarra's character, there are other characters whom I simply don't like. I think I will save myself the trouble next time and just end the series here. It's time to say goodbye to Shiarra and the gang.

4.0 out of 5 stars **MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!** July 6 2012

**MINOR SPOILER ALERT!!**

STALKING THE OTHERS isn't my favorite of the series but was still a fantastic addition the series and great read with some nice development. Shiarra was not in a happy place for a good portion of the book. She is angry and wants revenge. Surprisingly it comes to light that the belt that has helped Shia out of many dangerous situations ends up being not so good for her or her psyche.

Why wasnt it my favorite of the series? Well, there was a lot of lead up for what I was hoping was Chaz's demise only for him to be still alive at the end, It was disappointing. On the other hand Royce and Shiarra FINALLY progress in their "relationship" woot woot and I'm dying for book 5. Just like the previous books in the series there is tons of action and dangerous situations. Shia is constantly on the move. The relationship with her family still isn't fixed and that was a super big sad point for Shia throughout the book. I missed some of my fave characters but the characters that were involved were as always well rounded and full of development.

If your new to H&W Investigations I would definitely not recommend jumping into book 4 without reading the others. There is way to much back story and awesomeness to be found in books 1-3. I love the characters, I love the world, I love the writing and I love the story lines. Jess Haines will continue to be a must buy author for my bookshelf.
