About the Author

Rob Jenkins is a professor of ESL and the Faculty Development Coordinator serving over 300 instructors teaching for Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education in California. He is a recipient of the Santa Ana College Distinguished Faculty Award. Rob is also a textbook author and consultant for National Geographic Learning. He is the author of Stand Out and series editor for World English, and also consults on state and national projects. Rob and Staci Johnson, his co-author, were awarded the Heinle Outstanding Achievement Award for their contribution to publishing in 2013

Ever since I can remember, I've been fascinated with other cultures and languages. I love to travel and every place I go, the first thing I want to do is meet the people, learn their language, and understand their culture. Becoming an ESL teacher was a perfect way to turn what I love to do into my profession. There's nothing more incredible than the exchange of teaching and learning from one another that goes on in an ESL classroom. And there's nothing more rewarding than helping a student succeed.

A great general-English text for adult beginning students May 25 2012
By Winston - Published on Amazon.com
I started teaching the first edition of this book in 2006, and since 2009 I have used both that edition and this edition (depending on which was more available). This newer edition has some of the same exercises and images as the one published in 2002 and basically covers the same grammar and mostly the same vocabulary, which is American English. The most obvious difference is that the second edition has more listening content, so the CD set (sold separately) is now a pack of two discs, whereas the older edition used only one. The CDs are not required, however, as the listening content is all available in the back of the student book. Overall, this is a very good book for adults learning English for everyday life, especially in the U.S. I would recommend also buying the Stand Out 1 Grammar Challenge book, which is the workbook to accompany this textbook, for more in-depth practice.
Great content - lacks role playing activities Jan. 21 2013

Teacher's book (Lesson Planner) is owesome. However the student book lacks activities for students to work in pairs/role playing dialogues. That really sucks because if you don't create those activities by yourself you are going to have much more TTT than STT.
