With practically all of the Star Trek spinoffs now available as season sets, Paramount Home Entertainment FINALLY delivers the highly anticipated Star Trek - The Complete First Season on DVD this August 31, in an 8-disc collectible box set. The box will contain all 29 episodes - in airdate order - from Season One of the original Star Trek series, along with newly produced bonus features exclusive to this DVD release. The contents of the DVDs are as follows:

Disc 2: "The Enemy Within," "Mudd's Women," "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" "Miri"
Disc 3: "Dagger of the Mind," "The Corbomite Maneuver," "The Menagerie, Part I,"** The Menagerie, Part II"**
Disc 4: "The Conscience of the King,"** "Balance of Terror," "Shore Leave," "The Galileo Seven"
Disc 5: "The Squire of Gothos," "Arena," "Tomorrow is Yesterday," "Court Martial"
Disc 6: "The Return of the Archons," "Space Seed," "A Taste of Armageddon," "This Side of Paradise"
Disc 7: "The Devil in the Dark," "Errand of Mercy," "The Alternative Factor," "The City on the Edge of Forever"
Disc 8: "Operation: Annihilation"
** These four episodes have text commentary by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda
Disc 8 of the DVD also includes the following special features:
"The Birth of a Timeless Legacy": The definitive telling of how it all began: from the first pilot, "The Cage," (which will be included on the Season 3 set, and will be the same two versions released before) to reshooting the pilot with William Shatner, to the many challenges leading up to its premiere on NBC in 1966. Included are interviews with cast and network executives and producers.

I was quite impressed with the mastering of this series, now beyond 40 Years... Plenty of time and effort has gone into this effort and it shows. Colors are vibrant, especially in High Def, truly an amazing experience, despite the fact that this set at 133 aspect ratio... Don't expect these to be in widescreen, read the packaging carefully. As well, all of the Special Effects, have been upgraded to 21st century technology. The effects are impressive to say the least and, in my opinion, enhance this gem. As well, with the spruced up effects, they have managed to maintain the original effects, intention. This is a HD-DVD combo, which means that the discs will work on both players, side A is HD DVD, side B is standard DVD. Both sides are remastered beautifully in Dolby 5.1 on DVD, Dolby True HD in Hi-Def. The extras are fabulous, especially with the technology, interactive menus, of the HD DVD format. 7 episodes feature behind the scenes commentary. Several extras, were already present with the previous box set, but the rest is definitely worth the look. Overall, it is pricey, but if you are a true fan of the series, definitely pick this jewel up

Whoever thought of recording this classic series on film had foresight. The way that they've cleaned up the source material and remastered it for blu-ray is amazing. The new special effects sequences give new life to this classic series. Although some of the episodes may seem cheesy by today's standards, the stories themselves are not changed from the original and remain as a retrospective of the 1960's vision of the future. Highly recommended for any fan of the original Star Trek cast.

The 1080P picture clarity combined with the redone special effects will attract young and old alike, newer special effects are very good, but not quite as good as the next two seasons but ut still adds more wow factor that the original effects.

Wonderful picture quality (obviously, high def, but also improved contrast and colour), and it is nice having the option of the updated special effects - infuses some extra watchability compared to the much less sophisticated/lower budget effects from the 60s.

However, amazon.com sells this same set for 55% of the price. Even after duties and currency conversion, it makes absolutely no sense to buy this set from amazon.ca

A remixed version of the original series. I watch them in Star date order. Remastered series, interesting to compare with the original cut. Amazing that the filming was almost fifty years ago.
