Product Description

In 1965, Star Trek set out to boldly go where no series had gone before, beginning a three-year mission that led to a franchise that would last decades. Here at last is the first season of the original series all in one box, 29 episodes in their original broadcast order. That means starting with "The Man Trap," and soon followed by "Where No Man Has Gone Before," the second pilot filmed and the first one starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk. The many highlight episodes include "Balance of Terror" and "Errand of Mercy" (introducing, respectively, the Romulans and the Klingons), the two-part "The Menagerie" (which recycled footage from the original pilot, "The Cage," which featured Christopher Pike as the captain of the Enterprise and is not included in this set), "Space Seed" (introducing Ricardo Montalban's Khan character), and "The City of the Edge of Forever" (written by sci-fi giant Harlan Ellison and considered by many the best-ever episode of the series).

The first-season DVD set is supplemented by 80 minutes of featurettes incorporating 2003-04 interviews with Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and some 1988 footage of Gene Roddenberry. The longest (24 minutes) featurette, "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy," examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew. Slightly shorter are "To Boldly Go... Season One," which highlights key episodes, and "Sci-Fi Visionaries," which discusses the series' great science fiction writers (most famously in "The City of the Edge of Forever"). Shatner shows off his love of horses in "Life Beyond Trek," and, more interestingly, Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock." As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions, Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for a Star Trek TV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as other Trek TV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic case is an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the set is a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs, which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have For Any Star Trek Fan !!!! Dec 8 2007
I was quite impressed with the mastering of this series, now beyond 40 Years... Plenty of time and effort has gone into this effort and it shows. Colors are vibrant, especially in High Def, truly an amazing experience, despite the fact that this set at 133 aspect ratio... Don't expect these to be in widescreen, read the packaging carefully. As well, all of the Special Effects, have been upgraded to 21st century technology. The effects are impressive to say the least and, in my opinion, enhance this gem. As well, with the spruced up effects, they have managed to maintain the original effects, intention. This is a HD-DVD combo, which means that the discs will work on both players, side A is HD DVD, side B is standard DVD. Both sides are remastered beautifully in Dolby 5.1 on DVD, Dolby True HD in Hi-Def. The extras are fabulous, especially with the technology, interactive menus, of the HD DVD format. 7 episodes feature behind the scenes commentary. Several extras, were already present with the previous box set, but the rest is definitely worth the look. Overall, it is pricey, but if you are a true fan of the series, definitely pick this jewel up

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to finally have the series in my collection Aug. 1 2013
By Punkii
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
As someone who grew up with Saturday evening family time being set aside to watch the original airings, I am happy that I now have the full set in my collection. I have wanted to purchase the series for some time now but the pricing was keeping the dvds on my wish list and out of my shopping cart. With a $30 sale price for each boxed set, I decided to order all three seasons.

The packaging is okay with all three seasons done up similarly. I don't know that the plastic cases would hold up for any amount of time if they were being used over and over, but for my purposes, they will be fine. As far as the actual episodes on the boxed sets, the visual effects have been updated but not so much that they have lost the sense one is watching the original airings in all their sometimes corny glory. There are a few extras and special features included that range from somewhat interesting to "okay, now that I have watched that once, I am not sure that I really care..."

There are a couple of things that are subpar about this remastered set and why I only gave it three stars. The home menu is pretty much the same on all three seasons, and it doesn't give any flexibility in how you access the episodes. For example, there is no "watch all" option. You must individually select each and every episode from a menu that is set up to appear to be the transporter control panel, along with (what quickly becomes annoying) beeps and transporter sound effects. Once you choose the episode, you are taken to another selection screen where you must then choose either the episode or the trailer, and then after selecting the episode, it will start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture, less good sound Nov. 27 2009
This is definitely the best 'Star Trek' has ever been seen, except, perhaps if someone ever got to watch the original film it was shot on: the Blu-Ray picture is good and the new effects generally work well except that my Blu-Ray player puts up a 'picture angle' icon whenever they occur, which is a little distracting. Generally I felt that the sets, costume and makeup stood up to the increased resolution, though a few of the fake alien planet backgrounds do now look very fake.

Obviously this is 'Star Trek' and you know pretty much what's going to happen because you've probably seen it plenty of times before: Kirk seduces the girls and beats up the bad guys, Scotty works miracles, etc. This set contains many of my favorite episodes from what I first saw this show as a kid, probably more so than season 2 or 3.

The only real downside is the audio: not that it's bad, but it defaults to multi-channel audio which sounds _very_ quiet on a stereo TV. That means that every single time I start playing an episode I have to switch over to stereo audio so that I can hear what's going on: it doesn't even remember the setting for the next episode.

I'm not going to complain about that too much because if you have a multi-channel setup then that's probably the behaviour you want. But it did make me think that the audio was really bad until I discovered that the disk was picking the wrong track by default.

I'm not sure why Amazon has two different versions of this season listed for different prices. I'm not 100% certain of which one I have, but this is the cover image and it appears to have all the special features listed for the other one.
