In 1965, Star Trek set out to boldly go where no series had gone before, beginning a three-year mission that led to a franchise that would last decades. Here at last is the first season of the original series all in one box, 29 episodes in their original broadcast order. That means starting with "The Man Trap," and soon followed by "Where No Man Has Gone Before," the second pilot filmed and the first one starring William Shatner as Captain Kirk. The many highlight episodes include "Balance of Terror" and "Errand of Mercy" (introducing, respectively, the Romulans and the Klingons), the two-part "The Menagerie" (which recycled footage from the original pilot, "The Cage," which featured Christopher Pike as the captain of the Enterprise and is not included in this set), "Space Seed" (introducing Ricardo Montalban's Khan character), and "The City of the Edge of Forever" (written by sci-fi giant Harlan Ellison and considered by many the best-ever episode of the series).

The first-season DVD set is supplemented by 80 minutes of featurettes incorporating 2003-04 interviews with Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, other cast members, and producers, and some 1988 footage of Gene Roddenberry. The longest (24 minutes) featurette, "The Birth of a Timeless Legacy," examines the two pilot episodes and the development of the crew. Slightly shorter are "To Boldly Go... Season One," which highlights key episodes, and "Sci-Fi Visionaries," which discusses the series' great science fiction writers (most famously in "The City of the Edge of Forever"). Shatner shows off his love of horses in "Life Beyond Trek," and, more interestingly, Nimoy debunks various rumors in "Reflections of Spock." As they've done for many of the feature-film special editions, Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda provide a pop-up text commentary on four of the episodes filled with history, trivia, and dry wit. It's the first commentary of any kind for a Star Trek TV show, but an audio commentary is still overdue. The technical specs are mostly the same as other Trek TV series--Dolby 5.1, English subtitles--but with the welcome addition of the episode trailers. The plastic case is an attempt to replicate some of the fun packaging of the series' European DVD releases, but it's a bit clunky, and the paper sleeve around the disc case seems awkward and crude. Still, the set is a vast improvement both in terms of shelf space and bonus features compared to the old two-episode discs, which were released before full-season boxed sets became the model for television DVDs. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have For Any Star Trek Fan !!!! Dec 8 2007
Format:DVD
I was quite impressed with the mastering of this series, now beyond 40 Years... Plenty of time and effort has gone into this effort and it shows. Colors are vibrant, especially in High Def, truly an amazing experience, despite the fact that this set at 133 aspect ratio... Don't expect these to be in widescreen, read the packaging carefully. As well, all of the Special Effects, have been upgraded to 21st century technology. The effects are impressive to say the least and, in my opinion, enhance this gem. As well, with the spruced up effects, they have managed to maintain the original effects, intention. This is a HD-DVD combo, which means that the discs will work on both players, side A is HD DVD, side B is standard DVD. Both sides are remastered beautifully in Dolby 5.1 on DVD, Dolby True HD in Hi-Def. The extras are fabulous, especially with the technology, interactive menus, of the HD DVD format. 7 episodes feature behind the scenes commentary. Several extras, were already present with the previous box set, but the rest is definitely worth the look. Overall, it is pricey, but if you are a true fan of the series, definitely pick this jewel up

5.0 out of 5 stars Preserving a Classic Dec 30 2011
By Eric
Format:Blu-ray
Whoever thought of recording this classic series on film had foresight. The way that they've cleaned up the source material and remastered it for blu-ray is amazing. The new special effects sequences give new life to this classic series. Although some of the episodes may seem cheesy by today's standards, the stories themselves are not changed from the original and remain as a retrospective of the 1960's vision of the future. Highly recommended for any fan of the original Star Trek cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Trek Season 1 BR Feb. 12 2010
Format:Blu-ray
The 1080P picture clarity combined with the redone special effects will attract young and old alike, newer special effects are very good, but not quite as good as the next two seasons but ut still adds more wow factor that the original effects.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice collection, but overpriced at amazon.ca June 21 2010
Format:Blu-ray
Wonderful picture quality (obviously, high def, but also improved contrast and colour), and it is nice having the option of the updated special effects - infuses some extra watchability compared to the much less sophisticated/lower budget effects from the 60s.

However, amazon.com sells this same set for 55% of the price. Even after duties and currency conversion, it makes absolutely no sense to buy this set from amazon.ca

5.0 out of 5 stars STTOS remastered Sept. 25 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The amount of work put into cleaning up and redoing SFX was great, it shows, and it makes the show better to watch. Highly recommended. Now I can get rid of the 35+ VHS tapes from the old days of the show.
