From what I understand, the missing bit from this DVD edition (Kirk says to Spock - That young man is my son., then Spock saying - Fascinating!) was added on the Director's Edition DVD and so was not on the original theatrical release.

I can only give this trilogy 4 out of 5 stars due to some of the ridiculous bonus features and the FACT that Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, has an edit. Perhaps not a significant edit to some, but as a trekkie it caught my attention. It occurs as just after Kirk & party are beamed back to the ship from the center of the asteroid. As they are running up to the bridge, Kirk says to Spock - That young man is my son., then Spock saying - Fascinating! These two lines were cut. Correct me if I am wrong.
