Product Description

Still on Romulus in pursuit of his goal of reunifying the Vulcans and Romulans, Spock finds himself in the middle of a massive power struggle. In the wake of the assassination of the Praetor and the Senate, the Romulans have cleaved in two. While Empress Donatra has led her nascent Imperial Romulan State to establish relations with the Federation, Praetor Tal’aura has guided the original Romulan Star Empire toward joining the newly formed Typhon Pact. But numerous factions within the two Romulan nations vie for power and undivided leadership, and Machiavellian plots unfold as forces within and without the empires conduct high-stakes political maneuvers.

Meanwhile, four years after Benjamin Sisko returned from the Celestial Temple, circumstances have changed, his hopes for a peaceful life on Bajor with his wife and daughter beginning to slip away. After temporarily rejoining Starfleet for an all-hands-on-deck battle against the Borg, he must consider an offer to have him return for a longer stint. Beset by troubling events, he seeks spiritual guidance, facing demons new and old, including difficult memories from his time in the last Federation-Tzenkethi war.

About the Author

DAVID R. GEORGE III wrote the Crucible trilogy for Star Trek's 40th anniversary as well as Olympus Descending for Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Volume Three. He previously visited DS9 in the novels The 34th Rule, set during the timeframe of the series, and in Twilight, set after the finale. His other Star Trek contributions include a first season Voyager episode, "Prime Factors," and one of the Lost Era books, Serpents Among the Ruins, which hit the New York Times bestseller list in Fall, 2003. Currently he is writing a novella for Star Trek: Myriad Universes: Shattered Light, coming in December, 2010, from Gallery Books.

In his almost nonexistent spare time, David enjoys trying his hand at new experiences, from skydiving to auditioning--with his lovely wife, Karen--for "The New Newlywed Game", from hiking a glacier in Alaska to belly dancing in Tunisia, from ocean kayaking in Mexico to having dinner at an actual captain's table somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Recently, he performed his first wedding ceremony--which he and Karen also wrote--marrying their friends Jen and Ryan Van Riper. David believes that the world is a wide, wondrous place, with exciting adventures waiting around just about every corner.

He remains free on his own recognizance.

I think this book is setting us up for Nemo (last Star Trek movie) because of what happens to Spock. The Spock parts of the book were very interesting but the Sisko parts left me wondering (I didn't like the Sisko parts).

2.0 out of 5 stars I Was Disturbed After Reading Star Trek:Typhon Pact 3, Mar 11 2011

Spolier Alert:

After the first two books I was looking forward to this book, but my God this was a huge mess. I agree with a lot of the other comments here. Sisko is my captain and the way his charcter was handled was down right insulting. Sisko not only abandoned his wife but both his children and then becomes a whinning jerk! WTF, there is no way he would have done that. I agree the reference to his daughter kidnapping was driving me crazy, in ST fiction this never happened.

In fact, the character development of all of the main characters were just off. Spock not being able to understand the fine political manuevering of the Romulans, or Donatra being stupid enough to walk into a trapand then "kill herself". Please for the love of Trek make it stop!!!!!

I had to put in a few tapes of DS9 to remove the bad aftertaste

1.0 out of 5 stars lousy, Mar 5 2011
By Damon Mosier "Nomad" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Star Trek: Typhon Pact #3: Rough Beasts of Empire (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really excited when the Typhon Pact series was announced but having read all four of them I am extremely disappointed. Actually, I'm more than disappointed; I'm actively irritated and maybe even angry about how poor each of these books are. The books are so poor, that I almost wish that they HADN'T decided to maintain story continuity over the course of each book. Old Star Trek books used to be self-contained stories that didn't "really" happen in any official capacity. But now that they "do" count, when a particular book craps all over the universe we are stuck with it.

Such is this book. They turned Sisko into a total self-absorbed jerk who served no purpose to the story whatsoever. His story thread takes place in a total vacuum completely unrelated to the plot of the book, with the exception of one scene in which he is little more than a messenger boy. Also, I don't find Spock's assumptions and actions in the book to be logical at all, or at least not to the degree of absolute certainty Spock has. Of course, Spock HAS to be correct so events proceed in an illogical faction (to the reader) in order to prove the soundness of his logic in the story.

I also found it maddeningly frustrating to see what happens to Donatra in this book. This was another example where I found myself stupefied over the actions of a character. There is no way in a thousand years she would be so stupid as to walk into the trap she did. It was total garbage. What happened made no sense, why it happened made no sense, and how it happened made no sense. The worst part is that over the last year or two the TNG Era of Star Trek had been shaped into something wonderfully interesting and complex with everything shaken up, but now it seems like the publishers are doing everything in their power to force everything back into the old status quo!

I would like to be more specific, but I am trying to voice what is particularly galling about these books without giving away too many spoilers to people who want to go ahead and read them anyway. But I would advise everyone to stay away from these books like the plague.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sisko storyline not well handled. Felt forced., Feb 1 2011
By Kevin T. McGuinness - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Star Trek: Typhon Pact #3: Rough Beasts of Empire (Mass Market Paperback)
I agree with several other reviewers in that the storyline with Benjamin Sisko was not handled well. For one, there is a huge gap between the last book in the DS9 series and this one (e.g., what happened with the Ascendants plotline, etc.).

I also agree that the way Sisko is portrayed in this book seems very out of character and forced.

At the very least, I think they need to go back and create a transitional book that takes place before this one.
