Great concept -- poor finish,
This review is from: Star Trek: Vanguard: What Judgments Come (Mass Market Paperback)
The concept of Vanguard started out great, but somewhere the author(s) lost their way and seem to be filling the stories with irrelevant bits that really don't need to be included. To me the book was very disappointing and I threw the book into the discard pile.

I found the previous Vanguard books more interesting, especially the third one, but this one was boring ! I hope the end of the story will be more interesting !

I DEVOURED this book in two sittings in two days.Things are really coming to a head for the cast of SB47. Ward and Dilmore artfully and seamlessly coax the reader through what could have been a mess of sub-plots. But the book reads as a mental television show and you find yourself grateful there are no commercials which would hold you back from the characters you've grown to love. I am shattered that there is only one book left in this series. This is one good thing that shouldn't come to an end. :P 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

Every chapter sucks you in farther and farther to the point you realize you read the whole book in one sitting. Same thing happened when I read "Precipice", cant wait to see what the conclusion to the vanguard saga will be, this series has raised the bar for the star trek novel universe. "Storming Heaven" should prove to be if not the crowning jewel, a great tribute to this ground breaking series, as was "What Judgments Come" is only the latest work of genius by this group of four writers. W/ out giving away any spoilers I hope this review persuades all star trek readers to check out the whole series, your time will not be wasted...I promise you that!

Calm Before the Storm,
By Matthias Russell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Star Trek: Vanguard: What Judgments Come (Mass Market Paperback)
This was definitely a "wrapping it up" story filled with the end of some characters with the endgame of others decidedly marked. For the most part, the book lacked major epic events with the action sequences on the Omari-Ekron and Lovell the only parts that REALLY got my blood going. Though this wasn't the typical Vanguard thrill ride, What Judgments Come was still filled with excellent story and character interactions that managed to stir my emotions. I've enjoyed how every Vanguard novel raises the bar for the next with an astounding cliffhanger. Though WJC didn't end with one of these jaw-dropping cliffhangers it did thoroughly whet my appetite for the coming series finale. This book did a great job doing what the episode's leading up to DS9's finale did- giving the series a much needed calm before the storm providing fans valuable insights into key characters and leaving them feeling fulfilled for the time they spent in the series. Top notch story telling. The Vanguard guys have truly made a trek treasure in this series with Ward and Dilmore contributing a shining jewel with What Judgments Come. |
