Product Description

“YOU WERE TOLD NOT TO RETURN TO OUR SPACE.”

Little is known about the Children of the Storm—one of the most unique and potentially dangerous species the Federation has ever encountered. Non-corporeal and traveling through space in vessels apparently propelled by thought alone, the Children of the Storm at one time managed to destroy thousands of Borg ships without firing a single conventional weapon.

Now in its current mission to the Delta Quadrant, Captain Chakotay and Fleet Commander Afsarah Eden must unravel whythree Federation starships—the U.S.S. Quirinal, Planck, and Demeter—have suddenly been targeted without provocation and with extreme prejudice by the powerful Children of the Storm . . . with thousands of Starfleet lives at stake from an enemy that the Federation can only begin to comprehend. . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars VOY Relaunch Keeps Getting Better, Jun 3 2011
By Matthias Russell - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Star Trek: Voyager: Children of the Storm (Mass Market Paperback)
I was greatly anticipating this book and was not let down. Children of the Storm was probably my favorite release from the past year. Beyer had a hard job to do and executed it well.

The story has an antagonist that is extremely powerful and had little foundation laid for it. Often times, ultra-powerful antagonists are poorly done as they end up being silly or defeated using techno-magic. But the Children were well developed into a very original and intriguing species and the situation was handled in a very Trek way. The resolution was the type that I expect from trek and involved a perfect balance of ingenuity and technology without the techno-babble.

Another area where Beyer could have failed in this book was relying on original, off screen characters for - 2/3 of the book. Despite much of the story centering on new characters I was able to get into the plot and personalities and enjoy the experience. The returning VOY characters were also well done and showed Beyer well understands the characters and appears to know the directions we want the tv characters to take. At no point in the book did I think, "He wouldn't do that!"

The uniqueness of Full Circle Voyager to me is that it is a fleet with many, many characters. With 9 ships and 9 command staffs, it is easy to get overwhelmed, forget what is happening to each crew, and not get emotionally attached to anyone. This didn't happen to me. I stayed hooked throughout the read and never once got lost. I totally didn't expect what happened to the Demeter or Guirinal; they were jaw-dropping moments.

I expected to be ready for another author to take a crack at this but Beyer has kept the momentum going and each of her books keep getting better. I am more hooked on VOY than ever and look forward to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voyager, Jun 3 2011

Children of the Storm picks up where David Mack left off in Mere Mortals with an examination of the exotic delta quadrant race Children of the Storm. This is the best Voyager book I have read to date. The development of the new delta quadrant fleet is stunning. More often than once I thought the book would taper off but it continued to entertain all the way to the end. It is a long book but I do not think it needs shortening. The Voyager series now comprises an entire fleet rather than the reaming original cast. Chanters need to be and are developed on all the ships. This is the first Star Trek book which I believe can rival the quality of the Destiny series and is much better than the Typhoon pack books. I hope Kirsten Beyer continues to work in the Star Trek universe creating great books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving this direction!, Jun 3 2011

When the Voyager series first relaunched after the series had ended, I felt like things were a little lost. There wasn't much of a purpose to things. While the Destiny series was fairly devastating to the Star Trek world, it really gave the shared universe a sense of direction. I've also heard the belly-aching about some of the status changes in previous books (characters being killed or moving on). Personally, I am always ready for a little excitement and shake-up. I have to say that the last three books for Voyagers have been really solid. This writer has a grasp on the classic characters from the series and has added a huge cast to the arena. She's done so without making things seem crowded and still giving everyone plenty of screen-time. This book definitely kept my attention and left a few seeds for the next round of books.

I love the idea of adding a fleet to accompany Voyager and the stakes feel right and threatening. There's a lot of story crammed into this title. I CAN'T wait for the next book... even though it hasn't been announced and I certainly hope that Kristen Beyer is locked in for that one as well. I highly recommend this book and hope the nay-sayers give it a chance.
