Not the Best. Not the Worst,
By
This review is from: Star Wars: Coruscant Nights III: Patterns of Force (Mass Market Paperback)
This book wasn't the pot boiler that Jedi Twilight or Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter was. It was markably better than Street of Shadows so that is something. The timeline and canon flubs didn't bother me as much as pages and pages of 'Bota Bota Who's got the Bota??' Or Jax wondering which girl he likes more. Or which girl is bewitching him the most. The book was set up to be riveting. It could have been but it wasn't. It was kinda boring actually. I did like the Death Eaters-I mean Ring Wraths-I mean Inquisitors. But they just never felt like any real threat. And the book was sadly, mostly Vader free. I will say I liked that Jax and company weren't slain by Vader. That one is getting old. So points for the ending. It wasn't bad but it just didn't make the most of the fairly good premise Reaves set up here.

This review is from: Star Wars: Coruscant Nights III: Patterns of Force (Mass Market Paperback)
As predicted, "Patterns of Force" was better than the previous chapter. Even though the bota storyline got tiresome, I was satisfied with the ending and curious - will there be any more adventures about the J-Team? I hope so!

Best of the Series,

This review is from: Star Wars: Coruscant Nights III: Patterns of Force (Mass Market Paperback)
Patterns of Force is what most would expect from a Star Wars novel. Lots of force / lightsabre battles, a tie in to the larger Star Wars Universe and a hint of romantic tension. It had a great pace and just enough mystery to keep me guessing as to who the bad guy was at the end.A new type of force user is introduced in this book, Inquisitors. These Jedi hunters are lightsabre wielding sith-lings. I like the dynamic this brings to the series because we now get to see lightsabre battles between force users, something that was lacking in the first two books. You do not need to read the first two books of this series to enjoy the third. I would say that each of these three novels does a pretty good job of standing on it's own. That said there is a context factor that you need to consider. This series is a continuation of the character timelines established in Shadow Hunter and the Medstar series. I would strongly recommend reading those books before this one. I enjoyed all three, and they will provide the characters' backstory and will add to your enjoyment of Patters of Force. If you've enjoyed any of Micheal Reaves other Star Wars stories you should enjoy this one. He adds just a little humour and a hint of sentimentality to his characters. This gives you the feeling that you are reading about real people not emotionless hero's and villians. Check out my other reviews for more Star Wars hits and misses.
