Star Wars: The Old Republic is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game (MMORPG) for the PC gaming platform, set in the Star Wars universe. The first game of its kind, in it players choose from either the Galactic Republic or Sith faction, create a character, and along with a multitude of fans playing from all over the world, explore the fictional historic period of the Old Republic, as the Jedi confront the resurgent Sith Empire. Players can assume one of many races through their character, visit multiple planets, pilot spacecraft, utilize advanced dialog options in-game, take advantage of AI companions for gathering and crafting tasks and more.

Play Star Wars: The Old Republic and be the hero of your own Star Wars saga in a story-driven massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game from BioWare and LucasArts. Explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy.
Choose to be a Jedi, a Sith, or one of a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, and make decisions which define your personal story and determine your path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way you will befriend courageous companions who will fight at your side or possibly betray you based on your actions. Shouldn't Have Been a MMORPG,

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Star Wars: The Old Republic (CD-ROM)
Now I am giving this game four stars, but it is very important you read my whole review. If you are a very casual gamer, and you like a good story, SWTOR is a pretty good buy. The leveling experience is not very grindy because the developers did a great job of really making it a fun one player experience. There are plenty of cool missions, you get companions, and you get to make good and evil choices. It's a Bioware RPG, they do good work. Now if you're a MMORPG player, this will be an awesome MMORPG for the first month or so. But then you'll hit 50 and notice there isn't much to do. So you reroll, and that's pretty fun too, but you start to get annoyed when you need to grind to unlock your characters story. And here's the crux of the problem. MMORPG fans want endgame; there isn't much in SWTOR, so they'll move on after hitting 50. Single players fans interested in the story, (Which is really great in this game) Will get annoyed when they need to grind to reveal their stories. So in the end, I really really wish it had been a one player game. It would have been amazing. As it is... its fun for a month or so, then you move on.

I love MMORPGs, but so many required endless hours of dedication and if you can;t provide it; groups won't even look at you.Bioware does amazing work and this game is fun. I have yet to feel the 'grind' of other games. Soloing is more than achievable without losing out on the games experience and grouping doesn't need huge investments of time. Given this is the vanilla package; I have no doubts future expansions will more than cater to the hardcore gamers... but at least I won't be left behind while balancing my gaming addiction against work and family. Subscription fees are directly in line with other MMO's of this caliber.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Star Wars: The Old Republic (CD-ROM)
This game will not run by itself. It requires that you have internet access. It also mandates you pay a monthly fee to actualy play it. The 60 day fee $30 expires even if you dont play it. You cant even get the 30 day playtime that supposedly comes with the game - UNLESS you sign up for a subscrption. So much for "free play" thats included with the purchase of the game. Be prepaid to let Lucas Arts give you an ongoing reach-around into your wallet if you want to pay.
