5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional resource for fast, narrative driven sci-fi roleplaying., Oct 9 2009
By C. Richeson "CWRicheson" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Starblazer Adventures: The Rock and Roll Space Opera Adventure Game (Hardcover)
Starblazer Adventures makes use of the FATE system, a system focused around Skills, Aspects, and Stunts to create characters that make use of lots of player description to determine their capabilities. Skills are simply enough and are tested with a simple roll of the dice, though here Skills do tend to be broad and can have applications not initially considered. Aspects are one word or one sentence descriptors for a character which can be used in play to gain a bonus or suffer a penalty (and gain a FATE point for later use), thereby driving play forward in a way that interests the player. Stunts reflect an area of the character's expertise, and allow for the character to do something or have something unavailable to other characters.

In play the game has handled everything from Mechwarrior to Star Wars inspired sessions, and I've been very pleased with it. In particular, it tends to bring out the creativity in my players as they design their own Aspects and endeavor to be as descriptive as possible in play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, Feb 8 2010

I can't begin to say how great this game is. It's so much fun just to read for source material and ideas. Some my friends were a little hesitant to try but once they did they really enjoyed it. The size and amount that is covered although covered well can be a bit intimidating and put people off at first. That's just because there's so much for players and GMs can do. I will say even though the FATE rules are easy to remember some of the later parts can be confusing but that's just because of the sheer amount that's contained. The book is written well enough to where if you need to quickly refer to something you can look it up. I just wish more people have heard of this game maybe when the expansions get released it will catch on. Must have for sci-fi fans. Especially those who like space travel stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars A poorly-edited labor of love, Dec 23 2009

It's obvious that the authors were putting their hearts into Starblazer Adventures and have a great love for the source material. And the FATE system is fantastic. However, my enjoyment of the game was marred by a few things. First off, the editing is very poor; there are tons and tons of grammatical mistakes. Second, there are huge swaths of the book that are taken almost word-for-word from the Spirit of the Century SRD. Lastly, I wasn't all that impressed with the mechanics that were added to the core copied from the aforementioned SotC. A lot of elements feel tacked-on to SotC's core, and even contradict it, not to mention seem at odds with the pulpy space opera that is the game's source material. These flaws don't make Starblazer Adventures a bad game, but they don't really inspire me to invest any time in it. In all, I think there are far better FATE implementations out there.
