4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the pressures Jean-Luc faced..., Mar 8 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Starfall (Star Trek : The Next Generation : Starfleet Academy, No 8) (Paperback)
Vivid illustration of the typical father-son struggle. People tend to stereotype mothers & daughters being in conflict, so it's high time someone recognized father-son conflict as well. Jean-Luc was right to follow his own instincts and not let his father cow him into a life he didn't want. Also good was the portrayal of the jealousy of his brother Robert and how that made being close brothers difficult. One thing I would change that seemed a bit unrealistic: Why in the twenty-third century does Yvette Picard seem to be stuck doing most of the housework just to please Maurice? Other than that, I liked how Yvette stood by her son when he decided to apply at the academy again.
