A Fun and Enjoyable Read May 11 2011
By G. Guthrie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This was a very pleasant book to read because it felt like one big vacation and something I would like to be doing when I retire. Beaches, bars, friends and no jobs, it's just fun and friends. Except that this is a sci-fi tale and it's on another planet. It tells the story about a man named David Conway who has left Earth and is escaping to a religious planet, not because of the religion but because of the ocean as he feels he needs to be close to the water. He quickly finds an old space ship in a scrap yard and decided to build his home in it. He befriends the man working in the scrap yard, Hawk, and quickly makes friends with two of Hawk's fiends.

It's is fun reading of the friendship that evolves on this seemingly vacation type planet, get-togethers at each others house, get-togethers at the local bar, etc.. and then David suddenly starts seeing aliens in his dreams. This is where the plot kicks in and we find out that this scrap yard ship might be a little more than it seems and we find out that not only David but all the four friends have dark pasts.

This was a very enjoyable read - well written, an interesting idea and just plain fun to read.

Exquisite Mar 17 2012

It is really rather shocking how cheaply this book is priced. It is exquisitely written, every word chosen with care, to create this jewel of a novella. The closest comparison I can think of is to the works of Jack McDevitt.

The plot is in fact highly-entertaining and fast-moving, after establishing the initially-relaxed atmosphere of the backwater locale But equally noteworthy and enjoyable is the author's sense of compassion for his characters, and how "with a little help from our friends," we may even find redemption.

My only minor critique is the ending felt a bit rushed and too-neatly wrapped up. There is also a bit of the agnostic theme that so many authors feel compelled to push these days. But the entire novella is full of the sense of wonder that we experience with the very best science fiction. I practically never give five stars, but this author deserves to become much more widely known.

What a great little find! Eric Brown builds his world, its community and characters with care to create an immersive reading experience. There is nothing nasty or brutal about the story but a sense of sadness envelops the group of characters who form a strong circle of friendship. I will definitely looking to read more of this author's works. As other reviewers have commented, a very small price for such a well crafted tale. Thank you Mr Brown!
