Product Description

Why do you do what you do?

Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and moer profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things.

In studying the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way -- and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.

Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit-- those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another? WHY are people loyal to some leaders, but not others?

Starting with WHY works in big business and small business, in the nonprofit world and in politics. Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don't do so because they have to; they follow because they want to.

Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.

I agree with Simon Sinek that individuals as well as organizations must have a crystal clear sense of purpose or it will be very difficult (if not impossible) for them to decide what to do and how to do it. If they have the right purpose, it will guide and inform their decisions and, meanwhile, inspire and then sustain their efforts. Sinek suggests that the Golden Circle "helps us to understand why we do what we do. [It] provides compelling evidence of how much more we can achieve if we remind ourselves to start everything we do by asking why." In brief, here is Sinek's outside-in explanation:

"Every single company and organization on the planet knows WHAT they do...Everyone is easily able to describe the products or services a company sells or the job function they have within that system. WHATs are easy to identify."

"Some companies and people know HIW they do WHAT they do...Not as obvious as WHATs, many think these are the differentiating or motivating factors in a decision. It would be false to assume that's all that's required. There is one missing detail."

"Very few people or companies can clearly articulate WHY they do WHAT they do...By WHY I mean what is your purpose, cause or belief? WHY does your company exist? WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?"

Brief digression: Whenever I meet with a new client's marketing team, I go around the table and ask each person to answer three simple questions. One after another around the table, they have no problem answering the "first two: "Who are you?" and "What do you do?" So far, so good. Then I ask the third question and the subsequent silence is deafening: "Why should I care?" Eventually, one brave soul finally responds, citing and praising functions, features, benefits, etc.

This review is LONG overdue. I found Start With Why to be a fantastic and life changing book for me and my family. I enjoyed the book so much I read it three times in a row. I'll likely read it again a couple more times before the year is up.

So why? Because I believe what Simon believes, that people don't buy what you do, the buy WHY you do it. What you do is proof of what you believe.

My clients are business owners looking to grow their business, earn more clients, develop and lead a stronger team, get more rest and do their life's work... get all that right and profit is the inevitable result.

I used to be an "aspirational sales person". Not any more. Never again. Funny enough, my conversion on new business has increased as well as client retention...

Start With Why is now required reading for my current clients and anyone else who wishes to work with me. Best decision I ever made.

PS: I don't charge extra for spelling mistakes, they're just my gift to you ;-)

Let me begin by saying I listened to the (unabridged) audio version of this book before buying the hard copy. I bought the hard cover book because there are simply so many great business concepts and illustrations that I use to emphasize points I am making.

Simon's book is energizing. While the concepts aren't unheard before, they are presented with punch and power. And the way he has woven great accounts of businesses that implement or ignore these concepts is highly engaging.

In the audio version, you will find that his passionate and articulate delivery is compelling. Exceptional, even. I could hardly wait until my next hour of running to hear more!

This book was recommended to me by a friend who know I was struggling with context on the book I'm currently writing. "Start With Why" was exactly what I needed. This is a pertinent and powerful book that I highly recommend to anyone who is working on a complex project. The writing is tight and reader-friendly, with great pace and nuance. It's a winner!

After seeing the TED Talk on the Golden Circle,I knew that I had to get this book. Simon Sinek so easy into a concept that will confuse and irritate most small business owners but what he's really doing is romanticizing Michael Gerber's E-Myth concept of the entrepreneur (the WHY), the manager (the HOW) and the technician (the WHAT).

The examples and anecdotes he uses are engaging and fitting. A great read and recommended to all business owners.

Why does the simple always elude us? I loved this book and so did my life and business partner (one and the same). Our ability to complicate things is very high and this little easy to read book has slapped me up side the head and gave me new focus. If focus is an issue for you, if your decision making seems to be slowing or not scoring or both, or you are challenged by what should be easy, maybe it's not burnout. Go back and START WITH WHy! Read it!

I like the book. There are lots of advices on how to improve our life. Some of them gave me the "Aha" moment and did not realize that I was doing the opposite thing. It's simple but easy to understand and follow.
