1.0 out of 5 stars not very useful Dec 10 2011
By veronica2011 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very disappointed with this book and did not find it helpful. The information is very superficial and general. For instance, the chapter "Opening Your Business In 10 Easy Steps" states "Come up with a business plan", and "Find a host for your website". Well, that's just stating the obvious! There is no information in the book on HOW to do any of this, though. For instance, there are no tips on finding a host, no mention of what to look for in a host or what pitfalls there are. This problem persists throughout the book in all the other chapters. Not very useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Starting an Online Business for Dummies (WILEY) Sep 9 2010
By BlogOnBooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
More basic, of course, is the latest edition of Wiley's "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" by Greg Holden. This book, in it's 6th edition, provides a much broader view of the web-biz world, focusing on the tools to get started to build even the most basic e-commerce sites, with much less regard to specific niches and the degree to which they pay out. Traditional subjects like, third-party software, hosting solutions, SEO, payment systems, customer service, etc. are presented in a systematic order, allowing the business owner to understand each of the steps necessary to create a well-oiled online presence. This latest "Dummies" edition presents everything a new entrepreneur needs to get started with the basic of building a rudimentary e-commerce site (including an update on third-party tools from Google and other providers that have come on the market since the last edition) though to get beyond the basics essential to creating a true internet retail powerhouse, much more advanced information would still be required.

3.0 out of 5 stars okay book but lousy software Sep 28 2011
By Sir Roderick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book tends to be one of those that needs to be extremely up-to-date or it quickly becomes obsolete. So my first recommendation is to buy this book shortly after it is updated, then read/utilize it right away.
When I bought this book, it came with "business software tools on CD-ROM." This was entirely useless.
First, the files were not clearly named, so it was hard to use.
Second, I didn't find one useful or worthwhile bit of information on the CD. It seems to me like it was just added as a sales gimmick. I was disappointed. Hopefully the author has updated this software on more recent editions of the book.
