Spoons have been around in one form or another for over 30 years now. It's been 21 years since their last proper studio album release of new material (they have released 2 greatest hits compilations and a Cd of unreleased material from the period of '84-'86). What a welcome return this is! From the catchy music, thoughtful and insightful lyrics, and great sonics and production on the album - everything here is far from static or lacking in it's transmission. There is a real sense of energy/creativity and "realness" on this album that is so lacking in music today. While not really a proper "concept album", there is a central theme of communication in the songs and the albums artwork: Hint - 2 bonus songs can be downloaded if you solve the artwork's riddles. Gord Deppe, Sandy Horne, and Producer Jeff Carter, convey a real passion in this project - pulling from the Classic Spoons sound of the '80's and making it relevant and modern for today's audiences.
While certain songs for me stand out and would fit in perfectly on today's AC/Alternative radio - Imperfekt, End of Story, B Movie, Star Maps, and the lead single, You Light Up, this album plays best when listening from start to finish as a whole.
So put on your headphones or earbuds, pop this one on, and spend the evening decoding the many, many fun codes on the CD's artwork. When was the last time you got this interactive with an album?
