Holly & Band Steal the Night,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Steal The Night: Live At The Glenn Gould Studio (CD+DVD) (Audio CD)
And, as always Holly Steals my Heart! In my book Holly and her fabulous band, complete with the awesome arrangements by Aaron Davis, can do no wrong. So I won't blame them for the couple of fairly minor issues in the recording, packaging; Aaron's heavy breathing train noise on Train Song doesn't cut through (as it does on the Youtube clip) this lessens the effect, the piano sounds a little distorted, or less clear in places. Not sure why the CD doesn't include all the tracks- I would stop people in the street to play their version of Tea for Two!! David Pilch returns to the group on bass, and this track highlights his immense talent, Davide Direnzo playing just Hi Hat- awesome, and of course Holly! Her understanding of time, as well as diction, phrasing, humour used in this one track (well worth the entire purchase) would, or should, answer any critics (I assume there are some?) I also have to compliment AMAZON Canada, I cut a holiday short, when I heard about this disc, to rush home an order it! Turned up, at my house in Australia by the end of the week! Very impressed, and grateful, this is as close as I get to her! As I may be a little biased reviewing one of my all time favorites, I urge you to just listen to the samples- Charade- wow, great time and tempo shifts, fantastic solo by John Johnson on sax (resembles a former sax playing USA President?)all good, great addition to my Holly Collection, I think I have all now!

We love Holly Cole, it is wonderful to see her perform since she rarely comes to the United States. Great musicians with her.

Holly makes me jolly!,

We played the 'Steal The Night - Live at the Glen Gould Studio' cd/dvd with a group friends and its like we were transformed to the intimacy of a club-setting in front of her! The picture quality like HD; the sound recording pristine!Just sit back and let Canadian Jazz Vocalist Holly Cole and her amazing group of support musicians entertain with her confident and playful vocals of wonderful song choices. I really enjoyed her brisk and sassy take of Henry Mancini's ' Charade',and others such as, 'Down Down Down', and 'Smile'. Listen to Holly's interpretation of 'I Can See Clearly Now'; what impeccable vocal work! This is a must-add to Holly Cole fans and anyone who enjoys stylish, elegant jazzy vocalist peformers! 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful

Holly is in a rut,

I haven't listened to the DVD yet. This is just about the CD.This disc only introduces three or four songs that she hasn't previously recorded, and most of those are familiar to those of us who have seen her live. She still hasn't recorded at least one of her recent standards, "Ain't that a Kick in the Head." These tracks do sound different from her earlier interpretations, but they don't sound fresh to me. The musicians' riffs often distract from the lyrics. At one point, the pianist stumbles noticeably. I'm especially bothered by "Cry (If You Want To)". The earlier version is moving. The new one is gimmicky, with bothersome scatting. I did like the expression in Holly's voice when she sang, "it makes you so mad." This time, she really sounded angry, not sad. The best thing about this recording is "Down Down Down." (The title reminds me of the old Superman radio program.) Holly has recorded Tom Waits covers before, but this is new for her, a lively rock-and-roll sound. Usually, on a scale of 1 to five, I would give everything Holly does a thousand. But this one is only pretty good, something to whet our appetite for a major release later this year. |
