5.0 out of 5 stars Holly Cole live March 31 2012

We love Holly Cole, it is wonderful to see her perform since she rarely comes to the United States. Great musicians with her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holly & Band Steal the Night April 12 2012
By Andyemu
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
And, as always Holly Steals my Heart!
In my book Holly and her fabulous band, complete with the awesome arrangements by Aaron Davis, can do no wrong.
So I won't blame them for the couple of fairly minor issues in the recording, packaging;
Aaron's heavy breathing train noise on Train Song doesn't cut through (as it does on the Youtube clip) this lessens the effect, the piano sounds a little distorted, or less clear in places. Not sure why the CD doesn't include all the tracks- I would stop people in the street to play their version of Tea for Two!! David Pilch returns to the group on bass, and this track highlights his immense talent, Davide Direnzo playing just Hi Hat- awesome, and of course Holly! Her understanding of time, as well as diction, phrasing, humour used in this one track (well worth the entire purchase) would, or should, answer any critics (I assume there are some?)
I also have to compliment AMAZON Canada, I cut a holiday short, when I heard about this disc, to rush home an order it! Turned up, at my house in Australia by the end of the week! Very impressed, and grateful, this is as close as I get to her!
As I may be a little biased reviewing one of my all time favorites, I urge you to just listen to the samples- Charade- wow, great time and tempo shifts, fantastic solo by John Johnson on sax (resembles a former sax playing USA President?)all good, great addition to my Holly Collection, I think I have all now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holly makes me jolly! March 3 2012
By steve kovacs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
We played the 'Steal The Night - Live at the Glen Gould Studio' cd/dvd with a group friends and its like we were transformed to the intimacy of a club-setting in front of her! The picture quality like HD; the sound recording pristine!
Just sit back and let Canadian Jazz Vocalist Holly Cole and her amazing group of support musicians entertain with her confident and playful vocals of wonderful song choices. I really enjoyed her brisk and sassy take of Henry Mancini's ' Charade',and others such as, 'Down Down Down', and 'Smile'. Listen to Holly's interpretation of 'I Can See Clearly Now'; what impeccable vocal work! This is a must-add to Holly Cole fans and anyone who enjoys stylish, elegant jazzy vocalist peformers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly new interpretations of songs she has recorded before April 10 2012
By Paul Dushkind - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This set includes both a CD and a DVD.

The CD only introduces three or four songs that Holly Cole hasn't previously recorded, and most of those are familiar to those of us who have seen her live. She still hasn't recorded at least one of the recent additions to her repertoire, "Ain't that a Kick in the Head."

These tracks do sound different from her earlier interpretations, but they don't sound fresh to me. The musicians' riffs often distract from the lyrics. At one point, the pianist stumbles noticeably. I'm especially bothered by "Cry (If You Want To)". The earlier version is moving. The new one is gimmicky, with bothersome scatting. I did like the expression in Holly's voice when she sang, "it makes you so mad." This time, she really sounded angry, not sad.

The best thing about this recording is "Down Down Down." (The title reminds me of the old Superman radio program.) Holly has recorded Tom Waits covers before, but this is new for her, a lively rock-and-roll sound.

Usually, on a scale of 1 to five, I would give everything Holly does a thousand. But this one is only pretty good, something to whet our appetite for her next major release, "Night."

I like the DVD better than the CD. I'm not sure if these aren't the same performances, but they do seem better with the video. When Holly sings "down down down," not only does the music go down, but we see her gesture by moving her hand down. On "The Train Song," we see the singer and the musicians make train noises. And Holly looks so happy!

Holly Cole achieved fame for reinterpreting, subtly, familiar songs. On "Steal the Night," in songs where previously she had bittersweet poignancy, she emphasizes the fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Holly Cole I remember. Jan. 16 2013
By Scot E - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I saw Holly Cole live several years ago and was blown away... her voice filled the room like no other vocalist I have EVER heard. I bought everything I could find with Holly Cole's name on it and I have enjoyed her output over last decade, but this IS NOT her best effort. I was completely disappointed. Her voice isn't at the top of its form. It sounds like she is slurring her words. She is scatting at inappropriate moments, and the DVD was even more disheartening. She seemed to be phoning it in. She smiled and scatted all the way through Cry If You Want To- one of the most touching songs of all time and her signature tune! Her performance of Down, Down, Down was the only passable track, but nowhere near what I've come to expect from Ms. Cole. Pass on this live one and buy her new studio CD NIGHT or any of her back catalog instead.

Her voice changed, she changed. And she's good... Very good! You've got a secret is increbibly beautiful. Although the concert is a bit short, it is a must seen, whether you are a fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Involving Aug. 1 2012
By P. Warner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a bit of a pitstop from Ms. Cole. The bonus features come off as PR for A&R idiots, a commercial. Aside from that, absolutely mandatory. Nice camera work, moves at a good pace, just as a "concert flick" should, leaving one wanting more. Nice to see Holly having a good time. I understand she is single and if I had the opportunity I would pleasure her for hours on end.
