Book Description

Sept. 22 2011 Dover Pictorial Archive
Originally coined to describe fantasy and science fiction in steam-powered settings, the term "steampunk" has come to identify an aesthetic movement. Its campy redefinition of Victorian style blends elements of technology and romance, and its influence extends from literature and art to music and fashion.
This book and CD-ROM compilation offers artists and crafters a wealth of authentic Victorian graphics for creating steampunk imagery. More than 500 illustrations range from dirigibles and sea vessels to corsets and pocket watches. In keeping with the movement's inventive spirit, a gallery of original collages features inspiring examples of the illustrations' potential combinations.
This book includes a CD-ROM containing 539 royalty-free images saved in JPEG format.

I give this a 4 because there were no color images on the cd. Otherwise the images are a large size.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good clipart collection for scrapbookers & graphic artists Oct. 24 2011
By Danno - Published on Amazon.com
"Steampunk Sourcebook" is a Victorian/Edwardian-themed clipart collection + CD ROM. The graphics are saved at various JPG resolutions and are the sort of thing you'll like if you do digital scrapbooking, making collages or are involved in some sort of retro-themed project. Despite the Steampunk title, these are really more like the images Terry Gilliam used in his Monty Python animations (although perhaps the plethora of geared pocketwatches and guns speak otherwise). If you've got a penchant for surrealism, you'll get a major kick out of this book and the graphics ought to inspire you. It's definitely a niche market but I think I fall into that niche.

It's amazing how creepy and weird these graphics are when divorced from what their original contexts were, and as an armchair art historian I wish that Dover included some of this context in this book. However, I was happy to see that Dover included some truly odd assemblages and collages made from these graphics. Again, this edges closer to what (to me at least) looks like late 1960s psychedelic collages but since I like that look a lot I am not complaining. The included collages, to my eyes, are quite beautiful and surreal.

True, you're essentially paying for public domain images but good luck tracking these down in their original sources and then verifying their status as free-to-use! I'd rather be spared the effort by buying this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Source Oct. 26 2011

I just got this book today feel it provides a good starting point as far as reference photos go for developing a good steampunk illustration. I was kind of hoping for more pictures of victorian gadgets and fashion but still feel the book worth the money I paid for it. I don't need to worry about copyright issues at least and have a much better idea of what items I might want to research both in my local library and on the internet for further reference material.

If you're doing any sort of print project like a program, brochure or booklet, this is a great starting point for ideas and even illustrations. The book is chock full of a variety of steampunk and victorian imagry and is available at both high and low resolutions on the accompanying disk. I have not seen anything else out there with this variety and quality of images.

I think this book is an excellent value. As well as the CD of all the images with some basic editing tools, you receive 500+ images and 28 color examples done by a variety of people using the images in the book. At this price, what more could you ask for?
