Product Description

From Library Journal

Journey with the Joads for 21 hours in this first unabridged version of Steinbeck's classic. Controversial, even shocking, when it was written, the work continues to be so even today. The keen listener can hear why, because it poses fundamental questions about justice, the ownership and stewardship of the land, the role of government, power, and the very foundations of capitalist society. As history, this brings the Dust Bowl years to life in a most memorable way. Steinbeck (Travels with Charley, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/15/94) is a master storyteller and manages to engage the listener's sympathy with this epic story. Reader Dylan Baker, who gives each character a distinctive voice, draws the listener in. His female characters, especially the minor ones and Rose of Sharon, don't seem as authentic as his wonderful evocation of the fictional Tom, Ma, and Pa. But his voice is easy to listen to, and he is faithful to the characters' backgrounds and the plains region. The music that ends each individual tape is perfect for the story. This program is a well-produced, affordable, and worthwhile addition for any library with a serious audiobook collection.?Nancy Paul, Brandon P.L., WI

From AudioFile

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in l940, this famous protest novel is a natural for audio. The story is told almost entirely in the country vernacular of the destitute workers of the 1930's--some 300,000 strong--who had been driven from their farms and were pouring into California to face hunger, squalor and humiliation. (An inept narrator, reading their dialogue, could easily have made them sound like the Beverly Hillbillies.) Instead, Dylan Baker's sensitive interpretation has given them the dignity--even the nobility--that Steinbeck intended. He has also avoided another serious pitfall: overdramatizing some of Steinbeck's speeches in the last half of the book, avoiding what the Joads called "a preacher voice." The listener is hardly aware of occasional lapses into sentimental prose as Steinbeck delivers his many impassioned sermons against the selfishness and greed of the rich. Altogether, this is an outstanding performance; John Steinbeck would have relished it. J.C. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award Winner. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great but long, July 13 2007

This review is from: Grapes of Wrath (Hardcover)
Not a short book by any means, GRAPES is nevertheless THE American Classic. While his EAST OF EDEN is a remarkable work, GRAPES is even more powerful, dealing with the dust-bowl and the Great Depression. The saga of the Joad family from Oklahoma to California is fraught with danger, bias, angst, humor, and hard work. It's hard to imagine just how bad it probably was for these people at that time, but Steinbeck captures this remarkably well, and the details---the sights, sounds, and smells---are so vivid that it is amazing. By the way, if you get a chance to see the film with Henry Fonda, while it's not terribly faithful to the book, it is still very good. But GRAPES OF WRATH, the book, will blow you away, particularly with the last scene. Not since BARK OF THE DOGWOOD and Styron's SOPHIE'S CHOICE have I been so moved and shaken. Must also recommend Steinbeck's WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT for another great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, Mar 9 2005
By Michael Brown (Greensboro, NC, USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Grapes of Wrath (Hardcover)
"The Grapes of Wrath" a true American Classic is one of the most outstanding books that I have ever read. It does not fail to leaves its mark on a reader. This serious master-piece has its setting during the "Great Depression" and gives a general view of the 1930's. John Steinbeck who may be the greatest chronicler of this cataclysm wrote this THE GRAPES OF WRATH which is about the struggles of the poor during this time. In the story, the Joad family endures many struggles on their way to find work in California and their lives are a microcosm of struggles of the poor during this time. Like thousands of other families, they encounter hunger, violence, betrayals, setbacks and despair. Yet the Joads maintained dignity, courage, and hope to recover. America was fortunate in that the poor did maintain these virtues which kept their hopes alive and made them not to rebel and throw the nation into anarchy. The nation was also lucky with the ascension to power of Roosevelt. THE GRAPES OF WRATH shows how a people with hope and a leadership committed to its people can overcome disaster to become strong again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trampling out the vintage . . ., Sep 15 2006
By McDermott (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews
While my 'normal' reading veers off into more light and funny reads (McCrae's 'Katzenjammer' or Sedaris' 'Naked') I read 'Grapes of Wrath' for a college class. Reading the introduction and the first chapter of this book had my mind wondering and interested in what was going to happen. Then reading through this book gave many details and there were also a lot of interesting events that the Joad's had to go through. At times I felt this book went on and I thought I would never get through it, but other times I couldn't find myself putting the book down, which is quite remarkable when you consider that I usually avoid reading, unless forced to. I would definitely recommend this book, it gave me a sense of what some families, as the Joad's, had to go through in difficult and how one family stood together. This book brought me to enjoy reading and so I hope others will read this book also and find that reading is not always a boring task. Would also recommend --Katzenjammer--- by McCrae for an interesting book.
