From DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS to BEACHES, superstar Bette Midler has wowed audiences worldwide with her music, humor, and charisma! Midler now delivers a most engaging performance in her latest hit, STELLA! Tough and fiercely independent, Stella discovers that she is pregnant after a brief relationship with Dr. Stephen Dallas, but is too proud to accept a marriage of convenience from him or her well-meaning best friend, John Goodman (O BROTHER, WHERE ARE THOU?). Ready to face life without regrets, Stella single-handedly raises her loving daughter Jenny (Trini Alvarado). Through the years, the two share a very special relationship, until Stella faces the truth -- that she cannot provide her daughter with a life of advantages her wealthy father can give her. STELLA is a warm, humorous, and thoroughly entertaining film that speaks to the heart of all audiences!

2.0 out of 5 stars A day late and a dollar short., Mar 22 2003

This review is from: Stella (DVD)
I am going to start out this review by stating a fact. After the 1937 version of STELLA DALLAS the film was never remade....until 1990. Why, exactly, Hollywood decided the cynical 90s was a good time to remake this classic is still a mystery over a decade later. Why Bette Midler was cast in the signature Barbara Stanwyck role at first seemed like an odd choice. Of all the great actresses that could have pulled off a remake, why Bette Midler and why in 1990? We may never know. Unfortunately, there is little reason to speculate because this neglible remake has not held up in the ensuing years. But then again, this film was sadly outdated even by 1950, much less 1990. What made STELLA DALLAS a great film is lost to this remake. Much of its appeal was to the 1930s housewife, longing to forget the Great Depression and the poverty many experienced. With the end of the self indulgent 1980s and the dawming of the politically correct 1990s, STELLA remains an odd bird. Its rather like watching your grandparents do a rap. It just doesn't "fit" the day and age in which it takes place. Even the most avid Bette Midler fan can't help but feel a little embarrased for her here. In fact, there seem to be times during the movie when Midler herself seems confused by the time warp her movie presents. For those who are curious about the ending, it is much more affective is you see the original STELLA DALLAS. Here is comes off entirely unbelievable...much like Trini Alvarado's impish acting style as Midler's sacrificed daughter. My suggestion? Skip this, unless you are looking for some kitsch and have some time to waste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bette Midler shines as Stella, Jun 14 2004
This review is from: Stella (DVD)
STELLA stars Bette Midler. It's a touching movie about the bond between mother and daughter. After a fling with a doctor, she becomes pregnant, and refuses to accept any charity from him. As Jenny (her daughter) gets older, she allows her to have a relationship with her father. Stella and Jenny share special bond, and there is laughter and tears along the way. When Jenny becomes a teenager, and closer to her dad, Stella realizes she can't provide the life for Jenny that her father could, so she sends her off. I thought the ending of the movie was very sad, maybe not intended but I thought it was. Lots of laughs in between the tears.

5.0 out of 5 stars a true heart-rending classic, May 29 2004

This is an amazing movie that will keep you spellbound...seriously!!! If you have a heart, there is no way you won't be moved by this movie. It incorporates all the faces of Bette Midler as the protagonist; she is hilarious despite her loneliness, proud and yet humble, and selfish and yet so giving! Watch this movie!!! Trini Alvarado also gives a great performance!!!
