Product Description

Books in Canada

Stella, still a little girl herself, never loses patience with her younger brother Sam, even though he questions her relentlessly about the sun, moon, and everything he encounters around him. Stella, of Marie-Louise Gay’s Stella, Princess of the Sky (also nominated for the 2004 Governor General’s Award for Children’s book illustration), is unfailingly imaginative in the answers she supplies. She’s also clever at dispelling her brother’s fears of wild animals and the dark, and at turning his imagination to more pleasant thoughts.
While preparing to spend the night camping in their backyard, Stella announces that she has found a perfect spot for watching the moon come over the lake. This starts Sam off on a new round of questions:

“Does the moon live in the lake” asked Sam.“ Does it swim?”
“No, it lives in the sky,” answered Stella, “with the stars.”
“Can the moon fly, then? Does it have wings?”
“The moon floats in the air,” said Stella, “like a baloon.”
“Who’s holding the string?” asked Sam.

But even Stella cannot find answers to Sam’s every query. Instead, she waits for Sam to be distracted by the sounds of an owl. The book goes on largely in this vein. There is no story, but it does capture some essential quality about early childhood, when everything still seems new, inexplicable, suffused with magic. Marie-Louise Gay’s water colour illustrations are accomplished, visually soothing, and convey the endearing ethereality of small children.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–With charm and whimsy, Stella and Sam are back, this time spending an evening outside watching daylight fade into dusk, then night. Sam is the quintessential preschooler–full of wondrous questions. Big sister Stella is the authority on their domain, effectively answering him and calming his fears. " 'Why is [the sky] so red?' asked Sam. 'Can't you see? It's wearing red pajamas.'" She points out a family of raccoons. " 'Why are they wearing masks?' asked Sam. 'Are they robbers?' 'No, they're going to a costume party,' said Stella." The detailed illustrations effectively capture the deep blues, blacks, and grays of night, while also illuminating the siblings with pale azures, sage greens, and soft lavenders. This is a quiet star of a story that works well either as a group read-aloud or as a bedtime treasure to share one-on-one.–Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY

Stella and Sam are just as wonderful in this exploration of the sky and all its wonders, as in the other Stella and Sam stories. Stella shares all her wisdom of the Sun wearing red PJ's to explain the red night sky to how Polar Bears find their way home with the North Star! My daughter and I have explored the milky way on the internet since reading this book and while looking out the window at night, try to find the north star(just incase we find a lost polar bear). This magical book has got me to slow down and look at the night in whole new way and my daughter has learned from more questions about fireflies, raccoons and bats. Amazing how a few pictures and simple questions in a book can lead to spending a lot of time together exploring the wonders of the night. Just a fantastically fun read, for all ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars A simply told magical story, July 11 2005
By mcandret - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stella, Princess of the Sky (Hardcover)
This book is a wonderful story about Sam, Stella's younger brother, who is full of questions about the sun, moon and stars. Stella has simple, heartwarming explanations for Sam. These are illustrated beautifully by the author in dreamy watercolors. The dialogue is well-written and realistic. I think that's why my daughters love Stella and Sam so much -- they've had similar conversations. A book that will be read again and again, Marie Louise-Gay shows us the beauty in the simpler things in life.

I really like the Stella books. They are very worthwhile stories for children, and that red-headed Stella and her brother, Sam, are so cute!! This one made me cry, because my grandson was getting ready to move to Africa. I hope the stars remind him of his grandmother, too.
