Gay humorously contrasts the children's impressions of the sea in pictures and dialogue that capture Sam's experience of its frightening enormity, as well as Stella's joy in its secret treasures. To fend off the prospect of a swim, Sam keeps asking Stella anxious questions like "Does a sea horse gallop?" Stella's replies are as authoritative as they are imaginative: "'Yes!' cried Stella. 'And you can ride a sea horse bareback.'" Gay's whimsical watercolors show Stella swimming alongside tropical fish and holding onto the back of a child-sized pink sea horse, while Sam hangs behind, a tiny speck in a water ring on the distant shore. Ultimately, of course, Stella's irrepressible enthusiasm wins over Sam's sober hesitancy, and in the final image of this charming picture book the two of them float happily in a luminous blue green sea. This review is from: Stella, star of the sea (Hardcover)
Stella and Sam are just as imaginative and creative as my own children and so they can relate to the story with amazing ease. To start the cover is my daughters favourite part of the book because Stella is floating upside down but the book goes the other way! As Sam learns about the beach and all of its secerts both true and made up, so do I and the kids. Each time we read this story we talk about Sams questions and decide if Stella is right or not, in her answers. The pictures could take hours to look at and explore all that they have to offer, so we limit the expoloring of the pictures to two a read (counting shells or talking about the different fish we see). My daughter asks everytime we read this adorable book, if we can go to the beach in the summer and look for shells and swim with the seahorses. The book has given her the experience of what the beach is like that she would love to go and splash and swim herself.Anyone with children but especially those with ones who just don't stop asking questions will not only enjoy reading this to their kids but will be able to connect to the story line with a small giggle. This story only brings on more questions, so be prepared and if in doubt look it up on the internet with your kids they will love it! Enjoy, we do almost everyday!

This review is from: Stella, star of the sea (Hardcover)
this was a cute story about a brother and a sister at the beach. this is the brother's first time at the beach and he doesn't quite know what to make of the whole thing so he asks his sister a lot of questions about why things are the way they are, which she creatively answers, because of course all older siblings are all knowing and all powerful in the eyes of their younger siblings. one of the questions he asks, for example, is what is a starfish (or something to that effect), to which the sister replies, starfish are falling stars that fell in love with the sea. by the end of the book after they finish talking the sister asks if the brother's coming in the water, and he pauses before yelling out yes and running forward. it's cute.the art is very fun and energetic as well.

This is one of my favorites! The artwork is gorgeous and little brother Sam's inquisitive nature is funny. Stella's answers are also quite creative. My daughters really enjoy this one.
