Another winner from Farrell,

This review is from: Step Brothers (Unrated) (DVD)
Step Brothers is simply hilarious. Although the "grown man acting like a boy" concept is not exactly new, Farrell and Reilly make the formula a winning one. They play a couple of 40-year old losers who still live with their parents and haven't grown up yet. There's tons of vulgar gags and poopoo humour, if you're into that kind of thing. Laughs galore abound.

this was a very disappointing movie for me.the redband(restricted)trailer i saw made it seem very funny, raunchy and edgy.the reality is,it was none of those.i found it much too tame, considering my expectations.a lot of what was in the trailer was toned down.and i barely laughed.if you're expecting edginess, this is not the movie you're looking for.there are a few crude and lewd moments, and some crude language but nothing that hasn't been seen or done before.i also thought the movie was slow, and on the verge of being boring in some areas.you might like it if you're a Will Ferrel or John C. Reilly fan.for me,though this was one very disappointing movie.i give Stepbrothers a 2/5

One of the worst movies ever made,

This review is from: Step Brothers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
In an age where classic, intricate and carefully timed comedy is now a distant memory of the past, "Stepbrothers" stands on its own mountain as one of the worst examples of consumerist anti-intellecutalism and mind-numbing mediocrity. Will Ferrell continues to astound me with his dimwitted sense of comedy which tends to be a huge miss, with a few notable exceptions like Anchorman. Here, Ferrell is merely going through the motions with an uninspired, drab and notoriously unfunny script. In fact, I didn't laugh a single time during this whole sordid mess. Not once. I do however, vaguely recall the left side of my mouth curling upwards into what could possibly be termed a half-smile during the scene where John C. Reilly flatuates during his interview. Needless to say, it's never a good sign when a fart joke, the most low-brow of comedic devices, usurps an entire movie's humor single-handedly.Stepbrothers is a painful marathon to sit through. Its 98 minute running time is inexcusable (the unrated edition tacks on another excruciating 8 minutes) given the nature of the deadpan script and the complete lack of any jollies. I've never been a fan of John C. Reilly in comedic roles, having watched his tenure as Dr. Steve Brule on television and fumbling angrily for the remote control in a desperate attempt to change the channel. Reilly belongs in dramatic roles. Comedy simply does not flatter the man. Ferrell, on the other hand, falls into the trap of so many other SNL actors when they leap to the big screen: flat out failure, or modest success, at least from a critical standpoint. Stupid, childish dinner table antics don't even work as a parody of immature behavior, but rather a forced and flat attempt at it. When a movie has to rely on dismal one-liners and naked testicles to try and drag a laugh out of the audience, it really goes to show the complete lack of skill required to do comedy, the most difficult of genres. The 21st century has so far been plagued with an influx of dumbed down flicks relying on filthy sexual innuendo, rough language and mean spirited themes to make audiences laugh. And laugh they do, to my dismay. Is this a symptom of social breakdown and the rise of mass stupidity that was openly caricatured in Albert Nerenberg's 2003 work of warning? One thing is abundantly clear. Spencer Tracey, Blake Edwards and the great Peter Sellers must be rolling over in their graves right now. If there is one saving grace to "Stepbrothers," it's the fact that you can shut it off whenever you wish. That is of course, if you haven't been strong-armed by family or your date into sitting down through the whole monotonous thing, at which point you should immediately flee from the premises and risk losing their favor, rather than suffering permanent and irreversible I.Q. damage. To know that there are people out there capable of churning out this kind of crap is scary enough. To learn that it made $128 million at the box office is nothing short of frightening. This movie belongs squarely in the company of a particular group of people, but labeling them would prompt accusations of arrogance and snobbery on my part, forcing me to stop short. Rest assured, if this is what passes for mainstream, mass appeal comedy, then I clearly belong in another time period where comedy actually meant something. Someone invent a Time Machine, please!
