This is a review of the widescreen special collector's edition. I only give stars to the movie if it was for this media it would be one star. They should pay us to have to look at all the coming attractions. They whole purpose of going to DVD is to escape those nasties. I almost forgot to watch the film. Someone can make a mint just copying the DVD minus the Advertisements.

Now after 25 minutes of approved coming attractions the movie:

Frank Oz and others had a huge debate over making this movie dark, menacing or light, fluffy, and it shows. One minute it has Mathew Brodrick making hidden malice faces and the next moment they are cracking jokes about AOL. However by not trying to follow the formula of a strict remake they came out from the shadow of the original and make a stand alone movie on its own. The commentary track was just as good, if not better than the movie it's self.

The actors themselves were quite good:

Nicole Kidman of "Natural Magic" fame, as usual can look so emotional.

Mathew Broderick looked like Farris Buller with a secret.

Bete Midler was just being herself(s).

Christopher Walken adds that sinister touch. Nothing mechanical.

Faith Hill adds real spark to the movie.

Glen Close can keep a strait face.

Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) has it all and puts her whole life into her career. Through a series of miss events when she goes in to what she expects would be a raise is let go. The trauma sends her over the deep end. Her husband quits working for the same network to care for her. He only wants the BEST. So they moved to the quainter environment of Stepford. There Men can be men and Women can be women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun. Feb. 4 2007
By Asia
Format:DVD
I'd heard some really bad things about this movie, and I don't think it did that well at the box office, so perhaps this was why I was so pleasantly surprised.

I saw the original 1975 movie way back when, and liked it well enough, and naturally, after having been burned by so many other "remakes," was reluctant to see this one. But I have to say that this latest version with Broderick and Steep is so much better.

Of course, the "idea" has been updated to include computer chips inplanted in the housewives, along with myriad references to popular culture and politics. But the original premise and/or allegory is still there. Plus, there are a few nice new surprises.

The settings, photography, and acting are better than I'd expected, and the updating seemed real and unfortunately----as in 1984 or Brave New World----very believable.

One of the funnier updates includes a gay couple, with one partner wanting his effiminate other to be more "normal." The result is at once hilarious and telling---a true commentary on society as well as how we look at ourselves and others.

This is not some epic classic like Grapes of Wrath or The Fountainhead, but it is great fun and very well made. The original book from which this was taken isn't half bad either.

Highly recommended along with the movies "Rosemary's Baby" and the classic cult film "The Last Seduction," both of which are totally different (though Rosemary's Baby was written by Levin also).

5.0 out of 5 stars Stepford Wives June 26 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie is great - It reminds me so much of the wives I seen in the Worldwide Church of God founded by Herbert Armstrong. - Now called Grace Communion Church and the United Church of God (an offshoot)

I received it in good order - I prefer to purchase DVD's because I can't always watch a movie in it's entirety in one sitting - Since Rogers Cable in the London Ontario area has fixed it so you can't copy any movies - I no longer will be subscribing to their movies.

(this comment/review is my own personal opinion)how to start.how about
abysmal, boring,a complete train wreck?that barely touches the surface
when describing this mess.this movie is dreary, and depressing,to say
the least.painfully torturous to watch.but for some reason,i sat
through it all.the big problem was the writing then there is the
acting;sub par from some usually reliable actors.one big problem was
that they tried to make it funny.i haven't seen the original yet,but i
do know it was played as a drama, not a comedy.and i'm guessing it works
much more effectively.i also suspect the casting decisions were smarter
for the original. the actors were clearly miscast for this mess.they
did not look comfortable at all.plainly stated, this movie could not
have been very faithful to its source material and that is its
failing. But in that case it would have been the exact same movie as the
original.what i'm really saying is that this movie was not
necessary.i'm sure the movie going public wasn't clamoring for
it.bottom there are many crappy movies out there to avoid, and this is
one of them.for me The Stepford Wives (2004)is a 0/5

1.0 out of 5 stars D- remake of an A+ story... Dec 12 2004
By WeezyBoPeep - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This is the first movie review I have ever done on here...im normally a music reviewer on here. But this time I just can't keep quiet. I have read 5 Ira Levin books, and he is one of my favorite writers. So when I discovered that THE STEPFORD WIVES was made into a movie, I had to go rent it. I LOVED IT, the simplicity of the filming and the acting just captured the essence of Levin's story. Just like Rosemary's Baby. I was equally excited when I discovered that it was being remade again with the modern cast...after all, I'm a young guy and I thought, cool, now people will be able to see this great flick that I have loved for years.

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. The remake sucks. It has the main character, Joanna, as this feminist ultra career oriented freak and it really fails to capture the beauty of the original with Katherine Ross, and without a doubt, does not deserve to have Ira Levin's name anywhere in the credits...its a SHAM. Don't buy it. They ruined this great tale!!! Get the original, or ROSEMARY'S BABY which is available for a lot less on here...

1.0 out of 5 stars Red Haired Stepford-Child Nov. 15 2004
By Dan Mcgarry - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
First, I'm not in the habit of panning films. My worst criticism has always been "It's worth seeing, but I wouldn't buy it." This remake of the Stepford Wives has set a new standard. Don't even rent it.

I do not know what happened - whether they ran out of money for SFX or the stars demanded more of the budget than they'd counted on, but whatever it was, it cost the movie.

Basically, there are 2 ways to view this story Scary or Funny. They failed at both. The book and original movie were spooky and disturbing. Frank Oz set out to make the remake a comedy, but failed. There is no continuity or consistency. Are the Wives Robots, or brainwashed women? Either could be true. One of the deleted scenes shows Bette Midler turn into Inspector Gadget (interesting, since Mathew Broderick is in the film, too) sprouting a variety of kitchen utensils from her fingers, and finally dropping a lawn mower from her butt, which she then rides out into the yard to cut the grass. It was both disturbing and funny, and there was no doubt that she was a robot. So they cut the scene. I think they suddenly realized halfway through the production that they wanted a happy ending, and that wasn't possible if the human wives had been killed and replaced with automatons. So they cut the scenes where their mechanical nature showed, but not all of them - there's still enough enough glimpses of Faith Hill giving off sparks, and serving as an ATM machine. The possibilities of the robots had great comic potential, which was abandoned. Another cut scene had the husbands urging Mathew Broderick to get the cigarette lighter option - "You'll be glad you did..."

Bottom Line: The Remake of "The Stepford Wives" isn't funny, and it isn't scary, it's just sad.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless, Insipid, Vacuous, Waste of Time. July 5 2005
By CaterpillarGirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
Thank God I got this from the library, Free of charge, didnt buy or rent or go to see this in a theatre. I loved the original Stepford wives, it was funny and creepy and mirrored that 70's fear of women becoming "robot" housewives instead of being liberated. This version made no sense, they werent supposed to be robots, or were they? they had chips implanted into thier own bodies? which one was it? They had boobs that inflated, money come out of thier mouths, they didnt burn. BUT at the end it was implied that it was just some microchips in the brain that made them act differently. Were there two scripts that just got combined and no one checked the continuity? Nicole Kidman, poorly cast, Matthew Broderick, poorly cast, well, the whole movie was poorly cast. It wasnt funny AT ALL. The "remote controls" for the women were a bit like the "toys" I have seen in X-rated stores. Even the 1987 Made for TV movie "the stepford children" was better written AND acted than this flop.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Terrible Movie! June 2 2005
By Philip Szlyk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
This is an incredibly BAD movie!!

Other reviewers have discussed the plot and details, so I won't repeat them.

I just wondered who wrote the script: 100 monkeys randomly typing on computers?

This was one movie that I simply could NOT watch to completion. I hope that it did NOT make a profit - that would only encourage its producers and director.

1.0 out of 5 stars a Step Down June 11 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
The original Stepford Wives was a suspense, filled with a "Big Brother" feel of erie similarity; a comment on suburbia and modern values. This is a poorly made re-make, played for laughs. It has no moral center. In fact, it's so over-the-top, it is as if the producers of this trash just hired the stars to go through the motions, no acting requried, and the expression of the main characters is about at the same level as the robotic wives. Who cares who's replaced? I am still waiting for Hollywood to stop re-making films that were decent to begin with --or has everyone forgotten how poorly made imitations of Charade and Sabrina were?
