Product Description

From Amazon.com

Ira Levin's scary novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made for this compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semiclassic with a healthy dose of satiric wit. The DVD release presents the film in its original widescreen dimensions. --Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Nightmare, Sep 10 2010
By

(REAL NAME)
Is the community of Stepford, Connecticut, a modern day Utopia, or is there something sinister lurking under the surface? Having recently moved in from New York, Joanna (Katharine Ross from "The Final Countdown"), with the help of a new friend Bobby (Paula Prentiss from "Saturday the 14th") are investigating why the wives of Stepford seem so content to be vapid homemakers. Patrick O'Neal (Colonel Washington in the short docudrama "Independence") beautifully portrays a suave resident who seems to exercise an absolute and even ghastly control over the community. This controversial cult thriller provides a nightmarish vision of a world where chauvinism seems to find it acceptable to replace living spouses with compliant machines. I found this movie to be well acted and entertaining. If you can take it with a grain of salt, this DVD could make a nice addition to anyone's collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great, but very slow-moving picture., July 20 2004

After seeing the new version of The Stepford Wives (which, incidentally, I loved) I had to seek out the original, which I haven't seen since I was a kid. I was very impressed by most of the performances, most notably Paula Prentiss, who was absolutely magnetic. Although the story was absorbing, and the direction was good, the movie, not unlike Rosemary's Baby, seemed to go nowhere fast. Foot after foot of tape passed through my VCR, but the story unfolded so slowly, it was hard to remain interested........all in all, a must-see because of it's pop-culture influence.
