Product Description

Stephanie and Josephine is the compelling story of the lives and loves of two Oxford graduates, Jo Hill and Stephie Fischer. The novel unfolds against a grey, shabby picture of London, with the grandeur of the 1951 Festival of Britain fading into nothing but an indistinct memory. Before the 1950s are over, both Jo and Stephie, whose lives are carried on against the backdrop of a changing society, will have to make decisions with far-reaching effects. While Stephie's love life remains shrouded in mystery, Jo soon becomes involved with Adam Angelwine, a much older, and much married man, who brings her a mixture of both happiness and anguish. But how far are Jo and Stephie mistresses of their fate as women? The various choices open to these, and indeed all women, are sensitively explored. Although daughters and granddaughters may yearn for a life entirely different from their mothers', can young women ever really be as free as men?
