A Wonderful Tribute, Jun 28 2009
This review is from: Steve & Me (Paperback)
Terri Irwin has written a wonderful love story with this tribute to her late husband. Encompassing her life in Oregon before she met Steve on that fateful day in Australia and their many adventures together afterwards. She has managed to capture the spirit of this Wildlife Warrior perfectly and although not full of personal revelations this is still a well written memoir that I couldn't put down. Including 12 pages of photographs and a glossary of Australian terms, fans of the Crocodile Hunter and Steve in general will be swept away in the adventure and enthusiasm that was his life. When Terri was 27 years old she took a vacation to Australia. While there she visited a small wildlife park and in a chance of fate met the tall blonde force of nature named Steve Irwin. The two maintained a long distance relationship over the following year but were soon married. In fact their honeymoon escapade became the very first episode of the Crocodile Hunter. At first Terri had a tough time adjusting to life in Australia, it was quite different from what she was used to back in Portland Oregon. The snakes and spiders, the language barrier and the heat. She gives us many great stories of her newlywed years; working at Australia Zoo and their adventures in the bush where Steve was happiest. There's also some background about Terri's life before she met Steve and I was interested to learn that she'd also worked with animals back in the States, in particular a cougar rescue facility. She even had a pet cougar named Malina who she tried for years unsuccessfully to get into Australia. There are a few stories of Steve's childhood, working alongside his father as they perfected the art of capturing and relocating crocodiles. Steve often spent months alone in the bush and his capture of "the black ghost" helped shape him into the man he became. You will really get a feel for the Crocodile Hunter's spirit and zest for life here but also a continuing feeling of urgency on his part to experience everything and get things done as quickly as possible. Its as if he knew that he wasn't long for this earth. Steve also had a strong sense of family and longed for children to carry on his work after he was gone. Even though we all know what happened the ending of this book is still absolutely heartbreaking. I would suggest that you have some tissues handy as Terri unknowingly describes in detail the last time she and the children saw Steve and the last words she said to him. Steve Irwin always felt a need to hurry yet he lived his life full of joy and enthusiasm. We miss you mate but our world is a better place because of your work. I now catch myself rescuing spiders from the bathtub and think of you, thanks.

An amazing life, a beautiful love story, Dec 3 2008
I got my copy of Steve and Me and once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. This is a fabulous story of how one human being can change millions of lives by sharing and believing. Steve Irwin was making movies and documentaries, but before all of that, he was a husband, a son, a proud father, a friend. To the animals, he was a warrior, fighting for their protection and their rights. He never blamed one for biting or stinging him, he was the one who did something wrong. His love story with Terri is very touching and so inspiring ! You can feel the love they had for each other and their kids. Steve was such a proud daddy! He was a real family man, happy with his tribe around him while shooting documentaries in the bush. This book tells us about how Terri met Steve, her work in the USA, her move to Australia to be with the man she fell in love with at first sight, their work at the zoo and the shooting of the Crocodile Hunter episodes, Steve's love story with crocodiles and every other animals, his projects for the Zoo, his trips around the world, their 2 kids and sadly but true, Steve's death. Terri let us know about a side of Steve we never hear about, how he felt he wouldn't live to be old, how he wanted her to keep going with his work if something ever happened to him, how he didn't like to be in the spotlight. The book also tells about the black period following the death of Steve's mother and the baby bob incident, wich hurted Steve very deeply. What striked me was how simple and caring this guy was, how dedicated he was to helping animals and how much he touched the people around the world. Steve Irwin was a warrior with a heart of gold and he will be forever missed. Thank you Terri for sharing your life with us.

One of the Great Love Stories, Oct 29 2007
By Osprey - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Steve & Me (Hardcover)
This book is full of the REAL inside story of Steve Irwin, the man who has probably done more for wildlife than anyone, and it's jam-packed with stories of strange and wonderful animals, but the real surprise is the love story that is at the heart of it. I thought I knew everything about the Crocodile Hunter, but his wife Terri Irwin opens a window on his private life. Just as unbelievable as his exploits in the animal kingdom was the fact that he and Terri found each other. It was truly destiny. She was the one woman perfect for him, and he was the one man perfect for her. I wept real tears all over again for his death, but this book is as much a tribute to his life and his loves than a mourning of his loss. Incredible, easy-to-read and unforgettable.

A poignant love story ... but I wanted to know more, Nov 4 2007
By Esprit64 "Esprit64" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Steve & Me (Hardcover)
As another person here commented, those who know the Steve and Terri Irwin story will already be familiar with events about which Mrs. Irwin writes in her book. However, she provides a few more details of the back stories to these events and about which fans would otherwise not have known. This book is an easy, well-written read -- but as with all things "Steve Irwin" -- who was bigger than life itself -- I wanted to know more about how he got so many things "so right" about his life. Thus, I had hoped to find even more information about him in Mrs. Irwin's book. What life events shaped Steve Irwin and which caused him to become such a perfect human being -- allowing him to achieve those most basics of things in life that many of us can only dream about? He realized his life's passion and focus; he became so successful in promoting wildlife and conservation; he impacted the world with his many gifts; he loved and was genuinally loved by his parents and sisters; he chose a perfect wife for himself and who shared his love and his passions while she herself realized her own special gifts; he became a parent to two extraordinarily healthy, balanced, confident, happy and -- likely because of what we have already seen -- genuinely gifted and talented children; he surrounded himself with real friends -- and he demonstrated himself as a well-loved and respected leader of people and as a well-regarded employer. The list of Steve Irwin's life's achievements could go on forever -- but his core attraction -- that which endeared him to fans the world over -- was that he did everything with enormous joy, enthusiasm, focus, intent, belief, humor, and authenticity. Steve Irwin was simply an incredible story -- yet amazingly, just by being himself -- he also became a super-hero intent on saving our world and showing us how -- in a world so indifferent to destroying itself. Fans will genuinely enjoy the love story about which Mrs. Irwin writes. Her book does provide yet other clues about who Steve Irwin really was. And for that, I recommend anyone to read this book. Frankly, the Irwin Family are an inspiration for what it means to be well-connected to our souls and what can be accomplished in our lives when the fundamentals of having genuine family and friends around you are fulfilled. I believe Steve Irwin also showed us that our connection to animals and our planet Earth -- is far more important to our present and future lives -- than many of us yet realize. Perhaps a desire for privacy kept Mrs. Irwin's writing from becoming too revealing of this man she knew so well. Perhaps fans need to wait for another author to write about Steve Irwin, who while respecting the Irwin legacy and his family's needs, can yet objectively put forward even more information about this man that we all seem to need to know more about. I hope so. Steve Irwin reached through our television screens and compelled us -- not by order -- but by instilling in us a genuine desire -- to protect wildlife. If only other "Steve Irwins" could be duplicated in all walks of life, in many professions, as father-figure in many families -- wouldn't our world be a fabulous place to be? Who wouldn't want to wake-up each day to a life of pure adventure, joy and laughter? Thanks for taking us along for the ride, Steve. We still deeply miss you, mate. And, Mrs. Irwin? Thank you -- for sharing your precious memories.
