VIDEO:
Steve Winwood - Live In Concert was one episode of the PBS concert series Soundstage, originally released on DVD in 2005. This blu ray disc came with 1080i AVC/MPEG-4 1.78:1 encode. This concert was directed by the same Joe Thomas, who directed Chicago - Live In Concert. Compared to Chicago blu ray disc, this video is very average. (3/5)
AUDIO:
The DTS HD-Master Audio 5.1 was also unspectacular. Enough said (3/5)
CONCERT & SONG LISTING:
When Steve Windwood - Live In Concert (blu ray) was first announced to be released, I was overjoyed, thinking that finally, we have a decent Greatest Hits concert package from Steve Winwood in blu ray. The song listing was not listed then.
When I finally received the disc, I was truly very disappointed. The concert apparently was to promote his 2005 album About Time, which failed to chart. It lasted only 55 minutes! There were a few songs from his Traffic days, one from Blind Faith, and crying out loud, only ONE from his solo days: Back In The High Life Again. Missing are the rest of his solo hits, like: While You See A Chance, Arc Of A Diver, Valerie, Higher Love, The Finer Things, Hold On, Roll With It, and Don't You Know What The Night Can Do? You are dreaming if you think songs from his Spencer Davis Group days are included...no way!
The details of the song listing:
From the album About Time (2005):
Bully
Different Light
Walking On
Why Can't We Live Together
From Traffic:
Dear Mr. Fantasy (1967)
Freedom Rider (1970)
Glad (1970)
Empty Pages (74/1970)
Rainmaker (1971)
From Blind Faith:
Can't Find My Way Back Home (1969)
Steve Windwood solo:
Back In the High Life Again (13/1987)
Steve Winwood is a very talented artist, whose song output spanned many decades, from Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and solo. Although the contents were disappointing, his singing was still in good form, and the concert was enjoyable. If you like to hear him sing his Traffic songs, you may want to buy this disc. For me, my own preference will still be Steve Winwood's The Finer Things 4 CD box set, released by Island/Chronicles in 1995, covering his entire career.
