“Stickin’ To My Guns“ by Etta James was released by her new label Island Records in 1989, her 2nd and final release on Island Records. Barry Beckett, whom Etta James called his “Moses”, was the producer and also on keyboards. This album was recorded in Digital Recorders by Justin Niebank. I have compiled a song listing which is as follows:

LP “STICKIN’ TO MY GUNS” (Etta James)(Island 210 715)(1989):
01 WHATEVER GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT*featuring Arik Marshall, lead guitar.
02 LOVE TO BURN*featuring Arik Marshall, lead guitar; written by Dobie Gray, on background vocal.
03 THE BLUES DON’T CARE*featuring Jimmy Pugh, piano; written by Etta James and Brian Ray.
04 YOUR GOOD THING (IS ABOUT TO END)*featuring Jimmy Pugh, piano; written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes.
05 GET FUNKY*featuring Def Jam, vocal, & Bobby Vega, bass; written by Danny Rhodes, rhythm guitar.
06 BEWARE*featuring Leo Nocentelli, lead guitar.
07 OUT OF THE RAIN*featuring Jimmie Wood, harmonica; written by Tony Joe White.
08 STOLEN AFFECTION*featuring Josh Sklair, rhythm & lead guitar.
09 A FOOL IN LOVE*featuring Gene Dinwiddie, tenor sax solo.
10 I’VE GOT DREAMS TO REMEMBER*featuring Jimmy Pugh, piano; written by Otis Redding.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 This set was her second and final album release on Island Records. Again, Barry Beckett produced another funky record. It should be noted that Dobie Gray was one of the background vocals. In the booklet, she thanked “the Toronto Chicks.” Being from Toronto, I wonder who they are.
2 The sound is well remastered.
3 There is a 6-page booklet, detailing all the artists involved. There is a nice picture of Etta with her two sons, Sametto and Donto James.

etta james is a classic and there are some very good songs on this album. if you like etta you will probably like this cd, but i don't think it is one of her best. my major complaint was i thought the production and arrangements on many of the songs were too polished and lacked spontaneity. as such, they didn't seem to be well matched to etta's vocal style. perhaps this was an effort to make her more accessible to a wider, more rock oriented audience.

This was the first etta james album I ever listened to and fell in love with her soulful voice. I have all of her cds now from the 60s to present. Her version of your good thing is about to end has a haunting quality to it. Production on this album is also quite good. I would buy this album for that one song.

Think of fingernails screeching on a blackboard, amplified through a microphone, and you still wouldn't be able to imagine the horrid sound of this CD. Avoid it at all costs and listen to her Chess recordings instead.

This cd contains some of Etta's most raw vocal performances!!! a mix of blues, rock, R&B, country and rap! one jamming set!
