Its beauty engulfs you like a cold breeze,

This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
Before I recommend this album, I suppose I should give a word of warning to Death Metal fans. Opeth is NOT the usual death Metal. If you plan on buying Still Life (or any other Opeth record) thinking its a normal standard death album, you will be disappointed - or maybe pleasantly surprised. Opeth is much, much more.Still Life is a concept album, about a man who is banished from his village, only to return and find his lover already married. The songs vary from extremely heavy riffs with superb death growls (such as on Godhead's Lament) to sweet acoustic melodies with clean vocals (Benighted). That is to many people a surprise, since many cannot imagine death growls and clean vocals in the same song. Yet Opeth manage that, to create songs with an electrifying, and at times soothing, atmosphere. That said, the songs might take some getting used to, since the transition from heavy riffs to acoustic guitars (and vice versa) may be a surprise to some people. The cover art is pretty good and the booklet features lyrics to the songs as well as pictures of the band. The lyrics in my opinion are an excellent description of the feelings of the banished man, and are some of the best lyrics I have heard for a while. A recommended buy for anyone who appreciates melodious art.

Well worth it... with some work,

This special edition will blow away your original cd version if you're willing to do some work. The original cd didn't sound very good at all and this package here comes with the album remastered, plus a dvd with a DTS surround mix. The remastered cd sounds horrible. It's very highly compressed so don't even bother taking it out of the case. The DVD is what makes this worthwhile, since it sounds pretty amazing on a surround setup, plus you can rip and downmix the DTS track to 2 channels yourself and create a superior mix. Wait, what was that? I can play around on my home computer with some free software and in a few hours make it sound better than the people who were paid to make it sound like crap? Yes. Absolutely. I was skeptical at first when I stumbled upon a forum discussion that recommended this but it's no joke. I've played the remastered cd and the downmix to several people and everyone agrees that the remaster sounds terrible in comparison. So if you're a fan of Opeth and this album, do yourself a favour and pick up this special edition, do a search for info on the downmix process and listen to it with a proper mix. Enjoy.

As a huge Opeth fan, this album is definitely in my top 5, maybe even top 3.The combination of death growls and clean singing vocals is something not very common in a "death metal" band, but with Mikael Åkerfeldt superb vocal work, layered over top his use of very dissonant chords, it makes for a superb album for any metal head. The artwork on the package is some very gothic images centered around the concept of the album, a fantastic story about a man banished from his village for losing his faith. Lyrically Åkerfeldt tells the story through each song including themes of hate, fear, envy, and greif. If you love metal and "foresty acoustics" as Mike adds in the booklet, then you will definitely love this album.
